Be well, Cindy. A lot of us have been there. I'm sure it had to be done.

Bruiser was 12 years old, and was a good dog. Miss him already.
Don't know why I'm telling y'all this. Just depressed, I guess.![]()

Know how you feel Cindy. A dog is a man/woman's best friend. I've always had a dog mostly hunting types, but my last one was a plain old ugly mongrel that my son got out of the pound for his son. When they moved and couldn't take the dog they gave it to me. She died of old age about 5 years ago. Her name was Windy. I now just talk and play with the neighbors dogs.
I'm sure you did what was best for him, but that doesn't make the loss any easier to bear. I still miss the cat I had to have put to sleep over three years ago. He was my pal. The members of this forum showed tremendous sympathy and their posts brought me both comfort and tears.
Think of the good times; he'll take those thoughts with him as he moves on to the next level. Maybe he'll send you a sign that he's OK. The day after my cat died, it started to snow gently even though snow had not been forecast. I like to think of that as his way of letting me know he was all right and in good hands.
I remember when we had to put down my faithful companion Duke. It was probably one of the worst days of my life, but I couldn't just keep watching him suffer either.
I know that theologians say I am wrong, but in my mind and heart I still think that when my time comes, one of the first things I will see is Duke running up to greet me just like he always did. It just wouldn't be heaven without my best buddy.

Had to have my alsation put down when his back legs gave out with arthritis.
I chocked back tears myself, but I promise it will get better, and just see him playing with all the canines in their special heaven.
Even though their life spans are longer these days, it's still not long enough.

I remember when we had to have two of our cats put to sleep, about a year apart. It was heart-wrenching. yes, we replaced them, but we still miss them years later.

I see that MzLee provided a link to "The Rainbow Bridge".
I found the poem very comforting when it was sent to me after having put down another old cherished friend.
Bruiser knew that he was loved.

Been there, more than once, but it is my opinion that a dog tries their entire life to please and assist their owner, and when the time comes that 'your best friend' can no longer enjoy a quality of life, we humans should step forward and "help" them. They should not be allowed/forced to suffer.
Our collie is 11 and doing fairly well. He gets a baby aspirin a day for beginning arthritis. We're hoping for at least 15 years from him.
I had a cat I was attached to for a number of years. Every night he had to lay down right beside me and wouldn't lay his head down unless I put my hand under it. He would reach with his paw to tap my hand to remind me to make his pillow with it. After he would fall asleep I would manage to retrieve it.
After I put him down, since it was near a Christmas, one of the presents I got was a coffee mug with his picture on it so I could see him every morning with my coffee. By some unusual luck, that cup remains unbroken, and I still use it sometimes.
we've had dogs that, for one reason or another, we had them put down...
*just sent you a huge hug Cindi*

... that you have come to the right place to share your grief. I'll add my sympathies through the tears of memories of doing same to my beloved kitties. You will always have memories ![]()

Here's a picture of Bruiser a few years ago.

count the minutes of joy you had with him and how you released him from his pain. He will know that and keep loving you...
I have had to do the same for three of my wolves since last June--five total in the last 17 months.
Two for old age complicated with crippling arthritis (when the Rymidyl no longer worked) and one young (three year old) female with uncontrollable epilepsey (thought it was under control but she had 23 seizures within a 12 hour span and the vet said that her temperature was so high that there was no way she didn't have severe brain damage).
Remember the good times (and the time he turned the brand new leather jacket into a chew toy really was one of those good times when seen in retrospect!). ![]()
