General discussion

purpose of 1080p outputs

Sep 28, 2008 1:32AM PDT

What is the purpose of HDMI 1080p outputs in an A/V receiver. If I have a 5.1 channel home theater speaker system and a projector set up, will the output ever be needed? I always believed that I could just run the HDMI cables straight from my cable tuner to the projector, there would be no need to run it through the receiver.

Hmmm

The HDMI usely has the sound on it as well, so you would run the HDMI to your receiver then to your projector.

But I can't imagine a receiver like this lacking a 1080p output though then. Does that make any sense. Specifically, I am looking at the Denon AVR 2808 receiver, and it doesn't seem to have any 1080 ouputs. Do I need to find a receiver that supports 1080p output? I knew that HDMI supported audio and video, but I figured I could just use HDMI to output video from my cable box to my projector and use a digital coaxial cable to output digital audio to the receiver.

Pretty much all HDMI receivers of today

pass 1080p.

The ONLY real reason to run the signal to the receiver first, as opposed to what you are saying (to PJ, & SPDIF to receiver) is simply to access lossless audio available on Bluray.

This is the only real reason.

What does the specification "able to output 1080p" mean? That's not referring to being able to pass 1080p, correct?

same thing

is there any receiver with HDMI that can't? If so, that would be quite a disturbing thought.

Exactly...

That is why I created this thread because I was concerned when this supposedly higher end receiver, the denon avr 2808 (http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3526.asp) didn't have the feature. If you can check the specs yourself and possibly correct me, but I can't imagine this player not being able to pass through 1080p. Yet according to the specs, it can't.

Im not going to read the specs for you

but Id bet a lot of money it passes 1080p. you can try owner's forums, or even call denon directly for more info/.

btw, thats not high end. thats actually lower end for Denon.

Besides 2xxx series, they also make 3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx, and then holy moly the AVP + POA.

the 1xxx series is lower. as for the other 3 digit models #s, it could be that they are very similar with the 4 digit models. you have to ask, but Im pretty sure ive read someting like that. i dont know why. ask someone who knows, b/c i dont.

This is from the specs page:

This is from the product specs page: HDMI Video Outputs *1080p (and then it has that dash in the next column indicating the feature doesn't exist). Is that the same thing as being able to pass 1080p or outputting 1080p (that was the logical assumption I made, but I'm not sure if that is logical). Especially because the receiver could upconvert analog to 1080p, I wonder why it can't pass it.
