Purchasing netbook

May 24, 2009 8:24AM PDT

My son's laptop was stolen; therefore, I am going to lend my son my laptop for a few months. I will need one to use while he is away. Because he will be giving it back to me I don't want to spend much money for an extra laptop.

I only use the computer for e-mail and browsing the web. I would like Windows XP. I am considering purchasing a netbook with Windows XP. I am considering Asus Eee PC 900 White Netbook $230. It got great reviews except "The palm rest area gets REALLY hot 15 minutes after boot-up"

The other one I found is Acer Aspire One AOD150-1197 10.1" Netbook Intel Atom N270 1.60GHz, 1GB, 160GB HDD, Webcam, Windows XP Home Edition SP3 Version (Diamond Black) - LU.S570B.001 This is $300.00

I would like the best bang for my buck, but of course reliability is most important.

I look forward to your respones.

Thanks,
Karen

I've had the Acer 8.9 inch aspire one for many months now.

It is as reliable as any laptop we have. The 900 gets hot due to the celeron cpu from what I can tell but it is a BARGAIN.

I'd love the 10 inch model but would not do without a better mouse.

I added the Logitech v450 Nano.

I'd skip the Asus Eee 900 for $230, and get the 900HA for $259 (at Amazon). For that extra $29, you get a 160GB HDD, Atom processor, and no heat issues. Only comes in black, though (as far as I know).

Anything will do.

You are looking for cheap over function it appears.

However the one function you may really want to keep in mind is your typing. A cramped dinky Netbook keyboard may (or may not) be worth your effort. Check them out first.

Any cheap laptop will do the job you want.

On my post it doesn't say "cheap" It says:

"I would like the best bang for my buck, but of course reliability is most important".

I am not interested in a cramped keyboard.

That's something you can test drive at the store.

Also says "don't want to spend much money for an extra laptop". That equates to wanting something inexpensive (cheap). You appeared to take offense at Bob's use of the word "cheap". Nothing wrong with trying to be frugal. : )

I agree with you.

Regarding his comment "cheap over function"- I have always been frugal and it pays off. I said I don't want to spend much money for an extra laptop. And I wrote that even though I want the best bang for the buck, I wrote that reliability is most important, not the cost.

My son just bought a laptop so I no longer need to purchase the netbook. However, in the future as prices drop and they are made better, I would like one that is 10-12".
