Resolved Question

Purchase of New Desktop

Jul 29, 2014 7:23AM PDT

I am in the market for a new desktop. I was wondering if anyone would mind giving me a hand as far as what to look for. I use the PC mainly for writing (fiction novels). I also have a special needs child who likes to play minecraft. I myself like to play World of Warcraft. Our present PC no longer allows us to play these games (states video card - graphic card issues) it is from 2006. I need the PC to be internet ready for wifi. I would like a large screen. I am asking because I have no clue and when I went shopping the other day it looks like everything has changed. Computers no longer come with screens? These have to be purchased separately? Since I have no idea what I am looking for I feel as if I will be taken advantage of. I do not want to spend a lot - perhaps 750ish. Memory seems to be an issue as well since my son always gets us in the red. Our current PC has 218 GB of disk space and somehow we have about 19 GBs left. Any and all help will be appreciated. PS. I should answer why no bundled display.

Because one person needs a small display, another would want a 50 inch screen so it would not be possible to include a display in the packaging as we would have a dozen packages just for that one area.

Also, many desktop owners have displays they will re-use on their new desktop.

my current PC is an all in one - which I would never want again...a Dell XPS One...the screen does not even stay lit anymore...you must hit the screens on/off button repeatedly to see what you are doing and that is not productive...my first three computers all had the package thing - keyboard - mouse - tower - screen...2 HPs and a Dell...I do not even know what specs to look for...processor - memory - hard drive - what windows is best - and what is the gaming thing a video card or a graphics card...I am clueless...I am going to have this PC for the next several years and while I am aware that once it drives off the lot it starts to depreciate I still want to have a decent computer for the next several years...I do not even know which brands are best...I would simply buy aDell or HP because they are the brands I know

Resolved or not.

The forum software is not bug free so you can ignore all that and as you can see keep posting.

HOWEVER this is in the little visited Forum Feedback Forum rather that say, Computer Help.

I'll keep shopping and check back in later. Amazon.com has a best selling desktop list at
http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Desktop-Computers/zgbs/electronics/565098

Don't pull the trigger too fast as we'll want to be sure Minecraft or that game will be OK.

PS. I see some HPs at woot.com
Jul 30, 2014 5:03AM PDT

But for me HP is a no sale after they bungled an in warranty repair of a 3 month old laptop. 6 months of calls, web surveys and more sent a clear message to me they are no more than a shadow of the company I once knew.

A HP Social Rep did reach out but was not able to fix the issue as well. It was a technical issue that caused the trip to their repair center and HP claimed that they "buy the BIOS" so they would not be able to fix the issue.

Sorry HP, but if you've outsourced that much that you can't correct product flaws plus bungle a repair so badly, you got your last sale here.

not here

I looked in our best buy - nothing but separate pieces and the screens cost as much as the towers. Is 750 laughably low? Should I think about spending more do you think?

It would be for today's game machines.

They hit 1000 in seconds.

I don't see any deals today at woot.com worth noting. Let's keep shopping.
