I wouldn't recommend getting a PS3 as a blu-ray player. The PS3's blu-ray drive is unique, in that it can also play PS3 games. This would make it much more expensive to replace should it ever fail. On the other hand, blu-ray movie players will likely continue dropping in price until they eventually hit about the $100 point. They will be much cheaper and easier to replace in the event of some kind of failure.
If you get a PS3, get it to play games, not movies.
Okay so I bought a 1080p HD Samsung (LNT-4066F). I was curious if I should buy the PS3 or Sony's new blu-ray player for $499. I honestly don't watch that many movies so that's why I'm even contemplating a PS3, because I do play videogames. Anyway. I have an Xbox 360 so I'm set on HD gaming, but I do want to watch some blu-ray movies. All opinions are welcomed. Make sure you fanboys don't respond because I don't want to hear the extra nonsense. Pretty much if you own a PS3, share your experiences, you like it, why, you don't like it, why? Thanks all!
