psu modification

Aug 21, 2005 3:31AM PDT

i am in the process of making myself an extruded acrylic case for my pc. in order to save on space, i took the components of the psu out of the metal case, and will mount it right to the case. it is a thermaltake 420 w psu, and has more molex connectors than i need. so to save even more on space, can i just cut off or unsolder the wires for the extra connectors from the mainboard?

i dunno, first of all, i would never take apart a psu, but it's your money and your option. you will be able to cut the cables, but what many people that do that is that in the future, you might need them.

to calm you nerves (jk) i am being careful not to touch anything near the capacitors etc on the board. if i were to cut them, would it be possible to resolder them back if i found that i need them?

Let's rethink this...

The reason for a metal case on a p/s unit is to retain any fire or flare-up. It not seem that way, but its about the only sure fire(no pun) way to stop it from spreading if serious. There are modding p/s cases which are clear, but I forget the source. Just google for modding websites, it should pop-up. I suggest: http://www.overclockers.com for a link or two. Also: http://www.pimprig.com

Bad idea.

The metal housing on the power unit is an essential part of the screening. The case supplies a grounded shield for safety. Also the housing blocks electro magnetic radiation which can interfere with the functioning of the computer. The transformer in the power unit works on the basis of its magnetic field so there is no question you are going to have lots of stray fields rattling around in your box. Cutting your cables is not smart either. The chances of having shorts by cutting ribbon cables are high. All together not a smart idea Regards Stewart

do not screw with the psu! if space is a problem. get a bigger case! they are quite cheap!
