PS3 to a computer moniter?

Apr 13, 2007 11:51PM PDT

Hey I am thinking about buying a new computer with a new moniter and does any one think that I could use a HDMI to DVI connector then hook it up the moniter?

I'll write no.

Since HDCP is not assured over DVI you need to get a HDMI computer monitor and a HDMI switch. There are now PC video cards with HDMI out.

It's possible

But the DRM garbage will limit your abilities. It will mostly affect movies. Without the DRM of HDMI, the resolution output is limited. Just how much I do believe depends on the particular movie.

Games are less likely to have any such restrictions, but they could. Though with most monitors, this won't really be a problem, since they will likely be unable to use resolutions higher than 480i.

If you want to be able to enjoy playing the games in high definition, you'll want to invest in a nice HDTV set. Something capable of at least 720p resolutions, but 1080p would be as good as it gets for now.

possibly...

Yes, it's possible. However, unless your monitor and cables and any adapters all have HDCP support, viewing Blu-ray movies in HD is not possible. Games are still in HD, unless they are also HDCP encoded. I'm doing the exact same thing you are doing, and all my games are in HD, but my Blu-Ray movies are not. My monitor is HDCP, but the problem is my HDMI to DVI adapter is not HDCP compliant. If you want to enjoy Blu-ray movies, be sure EVERYTHING is HDCP. For gaming, however, any old $5 HDMI to DVI adapter will do.

Bear in mind what's been said

But also remember that BluRay movies and PS3 games have a 16:9 aspect ratio and most (if not all) good widescreen computer monitors have a 16:10 aspect ratio so you'll most likely have black bars on the top and bottom unless you can stretch the image. Also keep resolution in mind, I can't find a good monitor in the 17-22" range that has a resolution that will play nice with 720p and 1080p. Most monitors in this range will have a resolution of 1680x1050 so 720p and 1080p will have to undergo a little scaling to fit the image and it may introduce some artifacts, I wouldn't worry too much about it as other people have gone the monitor method and been quite happy.
