Wil the PS3 catch on here in the US? Maybe many are waiting to see who will win the dvd format war bluray or hd. Anyone know how long the war will last?

Until the next one

There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn from the much earlier VHS vs. Betamax competition, where there was a clear winner... But this time I don't think that's going to happen. Both sides have some pretty major players backing it, so I expect both will be around until such time that it's time for a new format.

It likely won't matter much. You'll be seeing more and more hybrid players that can handle either format, so you can just buy a movie and pop it in the player. Obviously PS3 games will likely be coming mostly on blu-ray discs, but who really cares that it's blu-ray? You care that the game plays on your PS3, and that's about it.

As for the PS3 catching on... I'm quite sure that once FFXIII is released, sales will pick up in a big way. But I also expect next year to be much better for the PS3, with Sony planning a pretty significant number of releases for the console. I forget the exact figure, but I think it was on the order of 200 new titles. Few people are willing to buy a very expensive game console that has a very limited selection of games.

Look at Sony track record.

Everyone of there consoles have lasted at least 8 years thats more than any console ever thats why the ps1 and ps2 are the best selling or sold consoles ever now Sony's said they expect the ps3 to last at least 10 years and with the new games and once the developers unlock the cell in the Ps3 it will truly be amazing just wait for Ratchet and Clank tools of destruction coming this fall this game looks and plays like a pixar movie and insomniac who made this game said they only used about 50% of the ps3 power. If it looks that good at only 50 imagine in a year or 2.

Yes

It will catch on. The main problem is the price. Even after a $100 drop, it is still a expensive device. But the fact that you get next gen game box AND Blu-ray player (and a good one at that) makes the price well worth it.

BR player

It's not a very good Blu-ray player when compared to the new Sony BD-S300 and the new Panasonic. The load times for movies is still long and the menu system to get to your movies is a pain on the PS3.

Also, I'd rather use the Blu-ray laser to play games and not wear it out on movies when I can buy a better standalone player that runs quieter, cooler, and has quicker load times.

Not to mention

There are numerous blu-ray movie players out there, but only the PS3 can play PS3 games.

What...

do you base your findings on? Do you have the new Sony or Panasonic br player? Granted, as newer br players come out, they will have added features that the current ones do not. You can always wait for a better unit, but do you want to? Also, how is the menu system to get your movies a "pain"? You do know that you can have the disc autoplay when you load it into the PS3 right? If you have this option set, I am not sure what the "pain" part about that is. As far as quieter and cooler, my PS3 runs very cool, and only my reciever runs quieter simply because it does not contain any fans.

Wearing it out playing movies? I wouldn't be too worried about wearing the laser out.

The simple fact of the matter is this. The PS3 IS a top ranked BR player. And yes better players will come out, but that is just the nature of the beast. There is always going to be something newer and with more features; NOT saying better, just newer. Also, if you want to enjoy PS3 games and want to watch BR movies, there is no better option out there than the PS3. For the same price as the BDP-S300 you can play movies AND play PS3 games. What would you buy? If your not into video games, then by all means by a standalone player.
