ps3 & plasma question

Feb 20, 2007 2:47AM PST

hope this is the correct forum. i have a panasonic plasma (TH-42PX60U) that displays at 480p/720p/1080i and i'm using my ps3 as my primary dvd player. i know that the ps3 doesn't upscale normal dvd's. but when i play video games the reolution is at 780p. i'm by no means an expert on plasma's, but when or how can games and dvd's scale to 1080i? thanks.

Since your plasma can display at both 720p and 1080i you should be able to set your PS3 to output at either of those resolutions settings. And if you have your PS3 hooked up to your TV via HDMI it should upconvert your DVDs to whatever resolution setting you choose too. Upconversion will not take place via component though.

the one thing i do know (and that people are kind of peeved about) is that the ps3 does not upconvert normal dvd's. as for the 1080i, i set the ps3 to optimal resolution and it reads the optimal resolution at 1080i, yet when i'm playing a game such as tw pga 2007 the tv reads only 780. guess i'm just trying to understand the difference with the resolutions. fyi, i'm hooked up through an hdmi cable.

thanks.

Well I am surprised that the Blu-ray player in the PS3 doesn't upconvert DVDs via HDMI.

I know there are scaling issues with the PS3 and 1080i HDTVs that do not also support 720p, but perhaps the PS3 cannot upconvert native 720p images to 1080i on any TV. The PS3 lacks a scaling chip so alot of older 1080i HDTV owners have no choice but to play games and watch BR disks in 480p. Perhaps your plasma will just keep displaying in the 720p rez because of the scaling issue unless it receives native 1080i content.
