PS3 on my PC monitor.

Dec 21, 2009 6:09AM PST

I've been googling around and trying to see if it would be possible to play my ps3 on my pc monitor when i get it. I've read that it either comes with cables to connect, or you could buy cables, but I'm wondering about audio. My current audio set-up is a logitech x-620 5.1, and I'm not sure how I'm going to set this up, cause there's (i think) nothing that would get the audio from the ps3 to my speakers, cause the only connections are the ones that go to the sub, and the ones that go to my sound card. I'm not the greatest with all this audio/video stuff, so I thought the interwebs would try n help me out. Silly

If you get an HDMI cable, along with something like this, and your computer monitor has DVI input, then it will work. That thing from BestBuy I just showed you can be bought from eBay for $2, but make sure you get a MALE for the DVI and FEMALE for the HDMI

It depends

It depends on the inputs your monitor will have, and whether or not it has any kind of audio outputs.

If you do what the other poster suggests, you'll find you have video, but no audio. So you need either a monitor with its own speakers, a monitor with analog audio passthough, or you'll have to try and find a PS3 cable that has HDMI plus audio breakout cables.

You could also look for a monitor that has native composite video input, but aside from the Dell UltraSharp line of about 20" and higher, I don't really know of many monitors that have this, and this would preclude anything over about 480p for gameplay.

It can be done, but with the current gen consoles (save maybe the Wii) you really need something like a home theater receiver that can strip out the audio from HDMI and let the video signal pass through. With older, non-HD capable systems, you could get away with a monitor that had S-Video input or something. The 360 has a VGA cable that has audio breakout cables, but I don't believe I've ever seen something like that for the PS3. It won't be easy, and knowing what kinds of inputs/outputs the monitor you're getting has would help.

the only connections in the back of my monitor are the power, dvi-d and a d-sub i think it says. this monitor is from '07. I think I'm probably going to have to set it up elsewhere, then. was just trying to set it up in my room for convenience.

thanks for your help guys. (:
