PS3 Upscaling
Jun 4, 2007 3:00AM PDT

Yep...IMHO that was a big feature missing at launch.

The PS3 is still too expensive for me to go out and pick one up just yet, but I'll be pretty tempted to get one whenever I get an HDTV. (My old standard definition 36" Toshiba still works fine after 12 years of use and I just can't see replacing a TV that still works well, but I'll be all over a 50" plasma whenever it finally dies.)

upscaling?

Can someone please elaborate on this?

How can you "upscale" a dvd, and what is the result?

If a dvd is not in HD format, are you saying that you can make it INTO an HD format??

well

When people say upscale they mean upconvert. An upconverting DVD player will take a DVD at a native resolution of 480i and use video processing calculations to display the image in 720p/1080i/1080p. Basically what the video processor does is interpolate the color properties for the extra lines that it needs to fill to go from say 480i (480 lines) to 1080p (1080 lines). It is more complicated than that but to get the jist, there you go.

Now just upconverting a DVD doesn't make it look at good as say a Blu-ray or HD-DVD movie. Your DVD will be in 1080p but with the video processing there are usually artifacts introduced to the picture and you will notice edges of objects are somewhat blurry compared to native HD movies.

Thanks for the help....

so now I guess I have to ask the question, how do I know if I have the 1.8 update?

How can I get it if I don't?

Is your PS3 hooked up online?

If it is and you don't have the most current update when it logs on it will let you know that new updates are available. You can also just click on the update icon under the toolbox menu. If your current on all the updates it will tell you so.

I take it, this is all from being connected to the internet......?

I haven't yet connected my internet cable, but I guess it's a good time to begin.
