ps3 hdd upgrades

i was on new egg and there was a 160gb hdd some one had posted that there was only 130gb avalible now i no that the for matted space is less ect. but that seems outrageous dose any one no about this the person did not say what firm ware version he had.

But it shouldn't take 30Gb to format a 160 HDD, if it's being used with a PS3 then the used space may have been a combination of formatting the HDD and installing the PS3 OS.

If Sony does anything like Microsoft did with the Xbox and Xbox360, there will be a number of partitions for different things. On the Xbox, there was a 4GB partition for game saves and other misc stuff like that, there was about a 350MB partition for the dashboard and core system stuff, then there was also a few partitions that were used for caching data off of the game disc to speed up access times.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony did something similar with the PS3. It makes sense, if you're going to stick a HDD into a game console, to cache data off of game discs onto the much faster HDD. Saves wear and tear on the very expensive blu-ray drives, speeds up game loading times, what's not to love?
