PS3 Blu-ray and DVD's look pink

Feb 3, 2008 12:38PM PST

I have connected new 80GB PS3 to a flat panel LCD 720p TV by HDMI cable. I followed the instructions and PS3 games play fine, the picture, color and sound is great. The picture is great on OTA and satellite TV also. However, the PS3 does not play DVDs or Blu-ray disks correctly. The picture on every DVD or Blu-ray is very pink. Everything is in shades of red. This happens on all DVDs and Blu Ray disks, all the way through the entire movie. I tried going back through the set up procedure but this is still happening. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Maybe a defective PS3

Sounds like you know what you're talking about so I'll skip right to saying that it may just be a defective PS3.
The one and only thing that I would suggest is to remove and reconnect all the cables, although you've satated that games work fine so i really don't have high hopes.
Sorry but it really just sounds like some kind of video hardware failure and you'll want to exchange it a your retailer a.s.a.p.

try a firmware update

It is doubtful it is a hrdware issue, since the games play fine and in the right colors. I would say it could be a problem with your current firmware. If your ps3 is connected to the internet, just go to settings> update, and select get from internet. if your ps3 isnt online, you can get the firmwares from www.us.playstation.com in the ps3 section. you have to save the file to a usb disk in the folder PS3>UPDATE, then on the ps3 from the update section selection get from disk. if that doesn't fix the problem, I would suggest returning your ps3 and getting a new one.

RGB

I tried the software update and that did not help. I went through the BD/DVD Video settings one at a time, each time starting the DVD over again, and finally got it to work correctly by changing the "BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)" to RGB from Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. Why this makes such a difference I do not know, but now the color looks great on Blu-ray and DVD.

Nice catch on changing that settings. I'll keep that in mind myself if anyone has a similar problem.
Thanks!

I had a similar issue and this fixed it for me. Not sure why or how this last update caused this issue.

Without getting too technical, and this is imo, the processing of the rgb signal is significantly different between the two types of processor modes.
