ps3 and cable box to tv then to reciever?

Jun 5, 2009 3:51PM PDT

Ok i don't get it...
PS3 connected via hdmi to pioneer 1080p plasma, HD digital cable box connected via composite cable (should be using component but don't have the cord and no hdmi on the back of the cable box), then a fiber optic from tv to reciever... I get sound from the cable box but i don't get sound from the ps3 WHY???
second question on pioneer tv why is the "tuner settings" selection in the home menue greyed out "current settings do not allow this option" or something like that. Not for me... for older people who asked for my help.

Thanks in advance
Ole

You need to consult the manual on the receiver ...

to where to set the switch position for optical audio connection; or maybe give out the model of the receiver in case someone might also have that model and point you to the correct switch positions. Or maybe just play around until you find it.

As for the "tuner sitting" grayed out, it maybe because you don't have anything connected there (just a guess); to be honest, actually I am not sure what you are referring to, hehe.

Maybe a solution.

I am not a wiz at this by all means but maybe I might be able to help you. I have a Pioneer receiver and PS3. My receiver is the only thing that I have going into my Sony HDTV. Everything else goes into the receiver (PS3, Wii, speakers and cable box).

common but that ant the answer

many receivers were designed that way and you would simply choose the component you want to watch. however theoretically that fiber optic cord should make it so that you don't have to change the setting on the reciever and not worry obout it.

Try this-

As someone pointed out, without knowing your specific model numbers it's difficult to be certain as to which input/outputs your equipment actual has. Keep in mind you aren't using the built in tuner on the Pioneer HDTV, the HD cable box does that. Also, don't run digital optical out from the Pioneer back to the receiver. The sound should not be going from HDTV to receiver- the HDTV is being used as a display only (assuming you have separate speakers connected to the receiver).

That said, until your 'older folks' get either an HDMI cable or Component cables, I'd try the following connections:

HD box (Composite out) ---> (Composite in) Pioneer HDTV
HD box (digital optical/digital coaxial out) ---> (digital optical/digital coaxial in) A/V Receiver

PS3 (HDMI out) ---> (HDMI in) Pioneer HDTV
PS3 (digital optical/digital coaxial out) ---> (digital optical/digital coaxial in) A/V Receiver
