Protection Plans

What do you think of the service or protection plans offered by companies (such as Best Buy and Circuit City) that sell digital cameras? Is it worth the extra money to have a camera 'protected' for two or four years instead of the automatic one year warranty? Would you pay for it?

This question has been asked several times before.
The replies are just about 50/50.

Just remember, most of those plans do not cover you dropping the camera.

The odds are that you will not need the protection plan.
Remember, the company selling the plan is making money out of the sale.
If they weren't, they would not sell them.

Just consider it insurance..........you may or may not need it.

Circuit City and Best Buy offer two kinds of coverage. They are either the standard coverage and the accidental coverage. They both offer accidental coverage on Digital Cameras, Notebooks, and gaming consoles.In my opinion it is worth to get a accidental coverage on a digital camera. Let me tell you a story. I just bought a digital camera june 06 at Circuit City with there accidental coverage. It was a sony dsc-p200. There was not a problem with it but I hated the camera cause it would take blurry pictures. Anyways I dropped it on "accident" a couple of times which cracked the lcd. Then I called the service people up and sent it in. A week later they told me they cannot fix it and sent me a gift card worth the purchase amount of the original camera plus tax. So if your the person who wants a new camera every year, just spend the extra on the accidental and you'll make yourself happy. They may make money but thats the way business goes. Peope will make money off of you reguardless of what your buying. Those are my two cents.

Well first of all I agree that Costco should change their return policy. It is crazy for someone to buy a tv or etc and return/exchange it a year later just because they didn't like it. Those are the people that are hurting them the most. Costco is also trying to change their return policy similar to match big box stores like Circuit city and Best Buy because they are trying to cut their loses. Circuit City and Best Buy at least had a sensible one that they state to you. In my case, my camera took very blurry shots but I knew for a fact that they would not fix it because they told me it was not a mechanical issue. The guy on the phone basically told me to drop it on accident and send it in. So I did just that and got a gift card. At least I purchased an accidental coverage on my camera and in my opinion didn't really do anything wrong.

Beth-I bought 1 year on my Nikon D40, which I bought through Ritz. Expensive, yes. Covers "everything? Just about. Short of taking a sledgehammer to it. I also sent in my Nikon lens certificate, which upgraded it to 5 years. Nice, where on that camera, the AF motor is on the lens itself. You have to evaluate them in each specific case, rather than to say they are all a "ripoff", as many people tend to say.

extended warranties...

put it this way - i work for a high tech company. i'm the one who determines what the extended (and warranties in general) cost us...

if you camera is going to break, it's almost always going to break right away (just the nature of electronics in general). they make a ton of money off of the extended warranties.

i never buy them - with as many electronic products as i buy, it wouldn't make sense. add together the total cost of the extended warranties... i could replace any one of my components, at least.
