Question

Proper way to use an external-powered hard drive

Dec 30, 2013 2:32AM PST

I need to know the basics of using my new (and first) external hard drive which is a 4tb Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive. This unit has a usb which connects my computer to the hard drive and also has a separate cord for its own power. I am curious about the specific way to use it; like should I unplug it after use or always leave it plugged in? General things like that would be helpful, thanks!

Typically you would leave the unit plugged in to the system, input and power.

proper way to remove/disconnect a USB device from the host PC. Drives in USB enclosures, self powered or powered by an AC adapter, are notoriously sensitive and prone to failure of some sort. All you need do is read posts in the STORAGE FORUMS to see how many users experience problems with USB storage device. Another word to the wise....don't ever rely on a single USB drive as the ONLY location you have important, can't-afford-to-lose data stored.

Your ext. HD is now just another source for storage. All the other posters have touched on what to expect or should do, but its your ext. HD use it as you plan to. Just take the special effort to back-up any super critical data more than once, don't think your ext. HD isn't prone to problems, it is. Like any other storage media it too will succumb to wear&tear and improper mounts/dismounts, so do the proper procedure. Your own ext. HD maker should provide details & info on usage.

The only thing I truly disagree with is that you leave it disconnected until you actually require its use. Allow it to sit out until its needed. Constant connection even with AC power as it is a "weak link" in USB connected devices, an ext. HD just may up and die for whatever reason because it sits idle yet connected. It is also an demanding device under USB port connection so I tend to advise leave it out until needed. It also "stews *heat*" and cooling is just basic thermo-alloy design to vent heat away if no active type.
