Projector image scrolling / not showing

Jun 11, 2010 8:52PM PDT

Hi,

Recently the image I get when I plug my laptop into a projector has been scrolling, or not showing at all. i also get the message 'not supported' on some projectors, or 'out of range' and then some frequencies.

I have tried changing resolutions, refresh rate, repair installing XP, reinstall video drivers, change the video drivers. I have also tried with different projectors.

Because I get the same problem in Linux when I switch to linux? Is it possible a virus did this? Could it be a firmware problem, or is my video card shot?

The O/S is: XP professional SP3 / Linux Ubuntu 9.04
The grahics card is and integrated GMA 4500MHD (X4500)

Adapter Properties:
Device Description Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
BIOS String Intel Video BIOS
Chip Type Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
DAC Type Internal
Installed Drivers igxprd32 (6.14.10.4957)
Memory Size 256 MB

Thanks very much for any help.

Dale.

Same here.

There are too many standards out there and no one true solution. I've encountered settings, bad cables and bad projectors so the one thing you learn is to test prior to the show and get it fixed before the show.

If your laptop does this then try another laptop. At the office we have backups for such shows. Our favorite is the netbooks for backup demos since we are not out a bunch and they are easy to transport.

Another laptop will work fine. Its the same laptop as I was using before , which used to work fine with all the projectors. I have dual boot and it used to work fine in ubuntu as well, now that's not displaying correctly either, and I certainly didn't change any of the settings in Ubuntu.

Id like to try and fix the problem if possible. Is there a possibility that there is a firm ware problem? I thought this would explain why it stopped working in ubuntu too.

To me

As you describe it this laptop has failed. I see no reason to suspect the firmware unless you changed that but didn't reveal that information.

Since other laptops work that's not a good sign. Ask the laptop's maker for an estimate to fix this.

firmware

No, I didn't do anything with the firmware. I thought maybe a virus could have damaged it. I thought firmware was the only explanation for why it doesnt work in Linux.

One nugget.

Almost all BIOS have a checksum check when they boot up. You can't go in and change one byte without an out right failure. And you can test your theory by installing the laptop's maker's offered BIOS to see if that's it.

But and this is a big issue with many posts in these forums. Folk leave out the make and model so we can't check to see if there is a known problem. For example those HP DV6000 models. Since this information is asked for everytime you post and this is all volunteer then I work with what folk offer for details.

computer make and model

The computer is from a new chinese manufacturer called Hasee. THe model is Hasee HP240.

I didn't try to change the bios or firmware for anything. To reinstall the Video card firm ware, would that be done by reinstalling the motherboard BIOS?

Yes.

That's how it is done. But remember that to do this we follow the maker's instructions. And if you check my posts you find I never have duplicated those instructions here.

It's because such instructions if off by one step can turn a machine into a brick. And why no virus outside the Chernobyl virus did this. The results of the Chernobyl virus ended with bricked machines rather than spreading so it was short lived.
