Thanks..Any idea when a FIX for this? Thinking maybe will wait a while before installing the SP2 or do you think should install soon as availble?

Fix? Breaking it was the fix!

In reply to: Re: Programs that may behave differently in Win XP SP2

Read more articles and you'll find that many security gurus and pundits think that if an application breaks due to SP2, then "GOOD, THAT SHOWS THAT THE APP HAD A PROBLEM!"

You as the owner of the application help get it fixed by pestering the supplier of the application you need fixed.

Are you asking that we use a less secure OS to let some broken app run?

Of course, I have 4 app's listed above. When (where) do we find out how to fix them? I have just checked the web sites for the ones that affect me and there is NO mention of any problems at all. Other than these apps not being able to automatically check for their own updates, what other problems could they have?

Another biggy (for me):
It just seem to me that after reading EVERYTHING I could find about SP2, all it really does is, as a default, change settings to what I already have them set. Of course, my ZAF is always on and up to date, my AV has auto updates, I already have EL's pop-up blocker and I have IE settings set, mostly, to max security. Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, etc. Why do I need SP2 then?
I was originally under the impression that it also make some performance improvements. But, does it?

The more I read, the more I think the whole SP2 hype will do nothing for any user with an average to advanced security awareness. True? I turned on Windows Auto updates, yesterday, in anticipation of getting it (tomorrow?). Should I turn it back off?

Yes. You got that right.

In reply to: Re: Programs that may behave differently in Win XP SP2

My neighbor was just about to buy a new machine. I supplied a one-page help sheet about the usual Anti-Parasite toolset (or Suite) of Spybot, Adaware, Cwshredder and Housecall. They took an evening to expell all the crud and the machine felt like a new machine.

To finish it off, they use Firefox except for two sites. Windows Update and one other site.

They are now very aware of the security issues and may not get all the benefit of SP2, but SP2 would not have helped them with the spyware. And it would not have fixed the IE issue.

I tried XP Home on a dual-boot setup for about three weeks. I was not impressed. I found it slow, wouldn't hold settings and I lost my printer and scanner.

It's gone and I'm back to 98SE. With AVG, ZoneAlarm, Mozilla, and some maintenance tools, I have only received one virus in eight years and that was from a nephew who emailed my while at University. Of course, I opened it. It was a brand new virus at the time, which Norton caught.

Other than that, I have a once used Windows XP Home CD, sitting here doing nothing.
