PROGRAMS list - how to move items?

Mar 2, 2004 11:34AM PST

I am new to Windows XP home...and I?ve been trying to determine how I can rearrange the programs listed on START ? PROGRAMS. I thought it was possible to drag them right on the Programs list...and I am able to do this - but only to change their position on the list. What I need to do is to move items into a ?New Folder? which I have created. So, (1) could some one advise me on this, and, (2) for future reference: is there an explanation of how to do this (in Help or somewhere) that I could refer to? Also: (3) when I go to START MENU ? Customize ? Advanced, under PROGRAMS are listed only 9 of the 40 or so programs which are on the actual Programs list; why is this? How can I get them all to appear here, not just 9 of them?

Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Starting a few years ago with Windows NT, not only would there be entries there, but in All Users as well. BEFORE WE PROCEED!!! Don't fall into the trap which some have and try to reduce the user count to a single account.

Next, try a right click on the start button and look at Explore All Users.

Thanks for the quick response!
A few follow-up questions:
(1) I went to Start ? Explore All Users, and indeed the full Programs list was now accessible. Is this the only way I can get the full programs list to be visible...or can I check or uncheck something to accomplish this? (2) What exactly is meant by ?explore all users?? (3) So, to move items from the Programs list into a ?New Folder? which I have created, I would need to do the Start ? Explore All Users route to get to the ?Documents and Settings? folder ? and it is within this folder that I would drag or cut & paste program names; is this correct? (4) Lastly, what did you mean by ?Don't fall into the trap which some have and try to reduce the user count to a single account.? I?m not sure what you mean; I?m just a high beginner. What is a ?user account?, what ?trap? are you referring to, etc.

Thanks again.
