Program missing, but shows in add/remove programs

Jul 31, 2011 9:27AM PDT

I can't find my garmin gps mapping software anywhere on my computer. No .exe file anywhere on the hard drive. BUT, the program shows in add/remove programs.

That often happens

It was a real problem in Windows 95/98/ME, and sometimes happens in XP as well. Some software or other is uninstalled, but Add/Remove Programs still shows it as listed.

It doesn't do any harm. If you want to use that software you may need to reinstall it.

I should have been more descriptive

Thanks for your answer, Mark, I realize I was so frustrated I left the most important part of the story out. I never uninstalled the software. I have also misplaced the disk, so I can't reinstall, and need the program desperately.

Oh, and I used Norton to compress the registry and optimize the disks a day before. Huh. Remembering more details now.

But still need help with a solution.

thanks in advance

Ouch,

and double ouch!

Nortons, and registry compression? That sounds bad.

I would have offered a System Restore back to when it worked, but I'm betting your version of Norton's disables that in favor of it's own.

So, did this GPS software disappear after you optimized and registry compressed? If so, try and undo those if you can.

I found some Garmin GPS mapping software here; http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp but I have no idea if that is what you require.

Just a note though, and I don't intend to rub salt in a wound, we don't mess with the registry in these forums. We actively do not recommend registry cleaners and optimizers. And as for registry compression, I have never heard of that before.

Thanks Mark, I promise to never touch the registry again. And, I am going to try the restore point tonight.

I appreciate your help.
