Let me be blunt. I've always considered McAfee plus Windows ME to be a toxic combination. It was Windows ME where McAfee first "Waterloo'd" and continued to bomb for years.
My prescription which you can take if you want or not:
1. Be Parasite Free. I consider it non-negotiable to eject all pests detected with the five tools noted at:

2. Eject (uninstall) McAfee and try a less resource hungry AV like Free AVG from http://www.grisoft.com

I am getting this message for Outlook 2000 (connecting through SBC Yahoo! dialup), AOL 8.0, and AOL 9.0, and Mcalert (I think that's part of McAfee VirusScan). The program (whichever one it is this time) then closes. It happens frequently -- 5 to 10 times in a day has not been unusual, despite complete power-off and reboot. Hardware: Compaq Presario 7000, Athlon 850, 384M RAM, 60G and 40G HD. Running Windows ME, Office Pro 2000.
Any suggestions as to cause/cure?
