Profile Suggestion, Lee

Since many of us wind up wasting our time to click on a 'see profile' link just to find out there is NO profile information, including 'email this member', it would be nice if the software techs could gray out the link when it's empty, and just create the link if somebody has put information into it.

If they separated the links from the 'posted by' name and the 'see profile'...then if you clicked the name only, it could show you what posts they had made throughout the forum as it does now. The 'see profile' one would stay grayed out if there was NO personal information filled out including 'email this member'. That way you could tell the difference and not waste your time and could go to one or the other for just the information you want.

Anyone else?

"Windows 95/98 forum" and message Oleaut32 snuffed out by null, cannot open the (see profile)!

Never have seen a grayed-out profile. Another problem with the profile? Strange.
Try this one out. Go to your profile and change your email adress.
System profile and the new email address starts up with a new member profile. 0 posts and as a member when you changed your CNET account. Will not link up with the older, established profile because the new update treats it like a new account.
Happened to me recently when I switched email addresses from AOL to Adelphia. New member since Sept, 2005. Not!
Wonder what can be done about this and other problems?

and yes, as of Bills' posting, the (see profile) didn't work...
but 'null' changed his user name and now he's 'visible' :--)

I'm no railroad engineer but when I View, Source on a CNET page I have to wonder why there are umpteen blank lines (32 at the very top) throughout that script, which in my humble opinion seems to be a waste somehow?

I always right click and open in new window

for all links in the forums.....I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time looking for system information or 'email this member' when all of that information is blank in the first place. If the 'see profile' link was separated from the 'username' link, then the profile personal information could be a clickable link only if they had filled anything out and you would be able to tell right away. The 'username' link would only show previous/all posts and stay a link at all times.

If I want to see just their system information I would know which one to click or not be able to...easy stuff.

If they also code both links to automatically open in a new window all the better since any typed in or copy/pasted links in posted message areas automatically do now so they actually know how to code it.

The only thing with greying out the profile link when they don't have their profile filled out is that the profile is not all about their tech info and bio, it's also a reference what they have contributed (posts) throughout CNET.

The profile page of members is not exclusive to the forums as it once was. The member profile is for the entire CNET.com site. There are many places that now have links to the member's profile also.

The username and the (see profile) are duplicate links. You'd only need the username and could remove the (see Profile) one.

Why not replace the (see profile) with the message of email this member or this member will not accept emails or whatever the message is when the members don't want emailed.
