about $800 will do - assuming the lighting is good enough. The Friday night games would have plenty of light on the field, so that should not be a concern. The interviews may be challenging depending on where the interview is held. Since none of us can know, we fall to the lowest common denominator and assume lighting will be poor.

Then we have a choice. Either spend more money on the camcorder for large diameter lans and large imaging chips or add a video light.

In both cases, use some sort of steadying device. Tripods are common. There are other devices. Just watch pro and college football games. The cameras are either shoulder mount, on a vest steady cam vest system with counterbalanced articulated arm or on a big pedestal. You'll see occasional large format (but not shoulder mount) handheld cams, but they will not be recording the game at all.

Pretty much any camcorder's built-in mics can do a fine job when they are in the correct place to capture audio - the problem is when this is the case, then the video framing is poor. And when the video framing is right, the the mics won't be in the right place. Again, we turn to the professionals and halftime or post-game interviews... handheld dynamic mic close to the mouth of the person speaking. Not a shotgun mic or a lavaliere. Many times wireless. The reason the pros use this stuff in the way they do is because it works. If there was a better way, they would already be doing it.

The Canon XA20 is a fine camcorder for $2,000. For $900, the HF G20 + a $300 juicedLink RM222 XLR (or BeachTek DXA-HDV), you get the same functionality (except no "top handle") and you have budget available for a decent wireless mic like a Sennheiser G3 wireless system
