Product development - waterproof tablet with

Jun 3, 2014 4:04PM PDT

Hi all,

I'm looking into developing a new 8" Android tablet and would like to ping up you guys to seek some feedback.

What do you think about a waterproof tablet (3 meter deep for an hour) Here is the spec:

10mm to 11mm thick
<400gram
Front / Back Camera: 2M / 5M
MTK Quad-core, 1.2Ghz
Battery ~4000mAh
Display 1280x800

So what do you think? I'm wondering if you guys would be interested in it if it's at ~$249?

Not really.

I see far too many choices today and the CPU you selected means you can't compete with say the Microsoft Surface 3 and what software titles I can choose for that. Also it's no iPad.

So what if the price is $179?

Would that change the situation? There seems to be no waterproof tablets out there at this price range.

Not a price issue.

It's Android and a truly waterproof model would not need to compete on price. That is, there is a fine market for tough waterproof tablets but for me while I like my Android phone and tablet, I pick up my Windows laptop when I travel as I can't get the job done on Android yet.

So I am taking that you wont be my targeted customer since you are looking for a device that you can do work on. I have to agree with you that Android tablets (and ipads for that matter) arent the best tools for doing work on.

My target customers are those who would buy android tablets for whatever purpose they were shooting out to get an Android tablet for thank you again for you opinion.

So anyone else has anything they want to share?

Let me share some more.

Some of my travels include trips to Taipai where you can't walk far without finding a OEM/ODM for you to cut a deal with. Android tablet designs are plentiful and waterproofing is not going to put you into the limelight.

I read your post and twice you listed the price and even a reduced price. To me this makes me think you think that price is what will determine success. I don't think I can teach the marketing lessons here. Yes, price matters but no so much if you are going for a niche market. But let's go after your waterproof concept a big more.

Does the touch panel work under water? That would be very interesting and could get you into a niche market.

Could you change to some x64 CPU and let folk install Windows as well? Now that would take the market as folk want to do that as well as Linux.

Thank you Bob for the feedback.

I agree with you that prices sometimes do but sometimes dont matter. The prices I put there are for reference. Since I recognize that besides the tablet being waterproof, its spec would put it in the arena to compete with tablets in the sub-200 price range competition.

At this moment I was shooting for the general touch panel technology. So touch panel wont work underwater. As for using x64 running Windows, I think thats a good idea since that will put me in a bit less competitive class. Windows is also going toward the 'open source' route recently therefore it is something to be considered.

So putting the Windows OS / processor topic aside, I'm wondering if you guys can provide more feedback?

In short, what is on my wish list.

The Asus T100 or better. While I am an author of some Android apps, at times I want the whole enchilada.
