Resolved Question

Processor stuck in MB socket

Oct 25, 2011 6:31AM PDT

It is a AMD 905E quad core stuck in a Gigabyte MB. I originally bought this to save on electricity. Since I got a little heavier into playing games. Its a 2.5 gh and I think its a little weak. I plan to Update the HD5670 video card as well. The power supply is 550w which should be fine.

Just one problem I decided to change the stock thermal compound. When doing so I found the processor is stuck in the socket. I tried to pry it out and tried to pull it out with the fan & heat sink attached. No go, I guess if I have to it will be a new MB, processor, and video card. I do not want to damage what I have, might keep it or sell it. So any good ideas on how to remove it? thanks

Just checking.

Did you flip the processor socket latch open?

Yes I did

From what I googled it seems some actually forget that part. But yes I did. I read it can take some force and twisting but how much is unknown before its gets damaged. I thought about a large pair of pliars - channel locks insulated with rubber but there is little to hold on to

Sounds like maybe...

broken or not open enough. Does it open almost 180 degree?

Its been over a month but

I believe the wire bail lifts up 90 degrees. I removed the heat sink and fan. I'm thinking should the wire bail go farther and actually lift or push the the processor out of the socket? I'll have to check the MB manual to see if I overlooked something in that part.

No, it doesn't push up or lift.

The socke that I am familiar with merely release the pressure apply to the cpu pins. Try push the latch pass the 90 degree. Good luck.

I can try to

I'll try to push the lever farther but the MB manual just shows it at 90 degrees. When I installed it the processor easily dropped in place then I locked the lever. About the only thing I can think of is maybe (but I don't know how) a pin or pins got bent. I have another look when I have time. If I can't fix it I'll replace the MB.

I forgot, thanks for your help

I don't know much about the 905E, but...

I think in the newer system now, the heatsink/fan must be removed first before the cpu can be remove. So look to remove the heatsink/fan first. Good luck.
