General discussion

Processor heat.

May 26, 2005 2:28AM PDT

Hi all,

I recently bought a new Pentium 4 3GHz processor and am facing some problems. Firstly, it gets really hot when I run applications such as Virtual PC or when I run games. The Processor Zone becomes like 63

(NT) Heatsink?
May 26, 2005 3:09AM PDT

What kind of heatsink are you using? Heat sink is the big fan on top of the CPU. Did it come with your processor or did you buy it on your own? Also, what number is it, like if it DOES have 64 bit it will start with a 6XX, some of te older ones are 4XX and 5XX. Only the dual core, are numbers such as 8XX. The number will determine if it is 64 bit or 32 bit.

If your using the original HS try the Zallman one that has the 120mm fan.
Is this a new PC (less than 2 months old?, if it's older it will not be a 6xx or 8xx)? Did you build it yourself or buy a vendor PC ( Dell, HP, ect.)
You didn't say how many fans you have now or how there are setup. John

Built it.

Hi,

I didn?t buy a vendor PC (such as HP, dell, etc...). I bought all the parts then gave it to some guy to assemble it. It's very new, less than a week old. But the processor is probably manufactured before.

Parts:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz Processor
Intel Original 865GBF Motherboard
512MB SimpleTech RAM
80GB 7200rpm Seagate Hard disk
...and other things such as the CD-ReWriter, DVD-ROM, Floppy Disk...

Regarding the fans, i only have 1 (excluding the fan on the heat sink for the processor) which is positioned at the back, just below the power supply.

Chow.

add another fan if possible

especially for P4 chips it'd be a smart move to get another fan moving air through there. not sure what your case is like but if you could get a fan either on top or on the side as well as in the back that might help a bit. if nothing else it would allow the ambient air the heat sink uses to be a bit cooler to start with which would help at least a bit

Processor Heat is OK.
May 27, 2005 8:12AM PDT

The processor heat is ok now. But the system zone 2 is overheating. Where is this System Zone 2 Located?

Secondly, my case is a bit weird. There is a panel which covers the floppy, has the power, reset switch, front USB etc... And right behind it, there is a place for a fan. That?s where I face a problem. Which position do I place the fan, (i.e. push air or pull air). In either case, from where will it suck in air, or where will it push air?

Yet, no one answered my question as this might be the problem because it's still new.

Thanks.

aint a problem cuz it new...

u happy?

p4s generally run pretty hot but urs shouldnt be too hot. my bro has p4 3.6ghz and his is really hot. is ur computer in a cool environment? Dl speed fan and turn on all ur fans to full power. if u want buy some more fans but i dont think dats necessary The heatsink and fan supplied by intel and 2 case fans should be sufficient to cool ur pc. is the heatsink/fan combo seated correctly? used any thermal paste like arctic silver?

he's only got 1 case fan
May 27, 2005 5:21PM PDT

just in case you missed that. i agree taht 2 corectly positioned fans should be able to do the job though, least most of the time...

can you find a pic of your case online so we could take a look at how it's built. i would seem a little odd having a fan behind the front panel.

fans

What size is your case exhaust fan? 120mm would be good. If you install a fan in the front of your case it should be pulling air into the box from the front vents, often hidden.

Ok, the fan below the PS should be blowing out. Put a second fan in the place behind the front pannel blowing in. This will creat air flow through the case, cool air in the front and hot air out the back. John

Will do.

Thanks. I try and do that. However, one thing still buggles me. From where is the fan behind the pannel going to get air from?

Intel's run hot
Jun 3, 2005 12:28PM PDT

You need to go back to the Intel web site and read about "thermally advantaged chassis'" My P4 3.2 was cooking until I modified my case to emulate one of the chassis that Intel recommends. It dropped my temps over 10 degrees under load.

My Processor heat is ok now. Its just that the System Zone 2 is over heats. Does anyone know where this Zone is?

Im using the Intel 865GBF Motherboard.

Bye!
