Processor died - Which of my options is better?????????

May 31, 2005 10:53AM PDT

I have a Compaq Presario 5102us, with Windows XP Pro, 40GB Hard drive, 386MB RAM and it's almost 4 years old. (Here's more on the pc's specifications:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&tool=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&product=93015&dest_page=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&docname=c00009363

I just got back from France and I went to use my pc, which was on Standby mode, but it didn't want to wake up. I turned it off and turned it back on, but it wouldn't come on. The inside fan, the one on top of the processor was unglued/loose and it smelled like burned inside the cpu. So the processor is dead!

My question is - Should I just get the processor I had, which is an AMD Athlon processor - 1.0GHz (Thunderbird, 200MHz front side bus, PGA) (or I can upgrade it to an 1.4GHz) OR should I change both the motherboard and the processor OR should I get a motherboard/processor bundle? If the latter, then what brand/kind should I get that will be best for my pc and my pocket? (I'm in college, haven't worked for 3 weeks because I was studying abroad, and not getting paid in another 3 weeks so cost is definitely an important variable).

OR! LOL, should I just get a new system??? I was thinking a Presario R3000Z Laptop, but not sure where I can get one other than Ebay. If anyone (Proffitt) has a good and expert opinion/answer, please reply asap! I need a pc asap for my summer classes! Oh, and I really like Athlons, they've been actually rated better than Pentiums so I'd like to keep it that way. Wink

Thanks! Desperately,

The pothole you didn't see coming.

The OS or operating system may be what Compaq supplied and tied to their hardware.

Many start off replacing the motherboard and then discover they need one to two hundred more dollars since the OS doesn't run on the new motherboard.

Windows XP Pro 3 years ago so it should be compatible. I guess you don't remember me, Proffitt. I was the one who was bugging you about Vosonic... I went to France and I just got back Saturday. It was awesome! Didn't get to use the Vosonic, but I'm going to as soon as I fix my pc or get a new one...

It's always something after the other with me, huh? Happy Hope you are doing well.

Now I do.

Should I duck?

My Vosonics have been great. Just the thing for a trip where I leave the laptop behind but want to unload the camera now and then.

I'll repeat myself that traveling with a laptop is great, but not the worry and having to keep track of that item. When I go on vacation, I now try to leave the laptop at home. But will admit I now have a Wifi PDA to carry around. MUCH BETTER.

PS. The OS issue looked covered.

Yes it is a relief... now what do you think about...

My new problem? My processor died, an AMD Athlon 1GHz Thunderbird 200MHz bus, PGA (all the info is on my original posting). The way the discussion has been going, I guess my better options are to either just get the same processor I had (or upgrade it to an 1.4, same type of processor) or I can just get a new system like I've told you about, the Compaq Presario R3000Z or a cheap CPU from Dell or something for now till I have more cash to get the R3000Z.

Changing the mobo/processor and everything else seems too complicated and pricey to me and time consuming. I need a pc ASAP since I need it for my summer classes, and of course, in the fall and just because I need one! LOL! Let me know what you think... I always count on your 2 cents.

Thanks for your help Happy

OK so any of these will do without changing much else?
Jun 1, 2005 2:02AM PDT

I'm gonna take a look at them after I get off from work. I'm gonna go to a local store near my house where I was told they sell all kinds of parts for all types of pc and they might have my processor. If not, I'll go on that website you gave me and see what I could do/afford.

Thanks for your help. I'll come back after 6pmEST and let you know what's up.

That's the idea.

And why I noted them. The P3 at 1.0 GHz was very close to the performance of the old Athlon 1GHz. Also, you save by recycling the SDRAM. If it's the common system I've seen, it's SDRAM.

replacement CPU for just a few bucks. Try that, and if there are furthur problems found that prevent the system from working. Spend the money to buy a totally new system.

New cpu meaning what exactly?
May 31, 2005 12:54PM PDT

New CPU meaning the bundle or buying a brand new cpu? If I buy a brand new one then there shouldn't be any problems.

limitations upgradung that high in that Dell, when you take into account, the need for a new power supply, the difficulty of mounting a new mobo into a Dell case, probably need new memory.

I was simply addressing you fixing the one you have. For that, any CPU replacement 1.1 to 1.4 will only be new in the sense that they are "pulls". They are very inexpensive [they are very old models]. The vendors selling them, in most cases, have purchased an entire unsold lot of computers, [replaced by newer models] stripped them and then sell the individual parts. Naturally they claim that they are "refurbished", the simple fact is that you cannot refurbish a solid state device. If the one you receive doesn't work, you return it and they send you a new one.

Tiger direct sells both new and pulls. Some come wrapped in any thing they have laying around to wrap them in and some come in the retail boxes.

OK, so what are you telling me I should do?
Jun 1, 2005 12:12AM PDT

Buy a new pc or just replace the processor? I'm going to a local store today and see if they have my old processor and see how much they'll want for it. The case is actually big and roommie so I dont think I'll have a problem with heating and stuff.

I would be totally surprised

if you find such an old CPU in a store.

I'm not an Ebay user so I leave that to you.

You will find them by going to

http://www.pricewatch.com Replacing the CPU is talking about a $35 fix for a computer that has failed. The idea of a new mobo CPU, Memory et al is a totally different ballgame. That is certainly a decision you must make. If you are like most of us the dead CPU is a great excuse to get a new computer, the wife will never know that you could have fixed the old one and saved enough to buy her a new outfit. LOL [although your handle makes one think that you are a female].

If you can afford to go with a new setup, and got an AMD 64 bit CPU, then I would only [my opinion] get one with a socket 939 mobo. I notice that the ones in your link are all socket 754.

Socket 939 will even allow another upgrade to the Dual Core CPU in a year or so. Just a new CPU and a BIOS upgrade.

The regular 64 bit CPU's in the socket 754 configuration do NOT support Dual Channel [unrelated to dual core] memory.

Make certain that the new mobo can be mounted into the existing case and the mounting holes line up. Remove any hex standoffs that do not align with the mounting holes of the new mobo. They will short out [possibly damage] the printed circuitry on the bottom of the mobo.

Remember, a higher wattage power supply also.

Ok, this is getting complicated, lol
Jun 1, 2005 1:25AM PDT

So I either buy the same processor I have now and leave it alone or buy a new computer/laptop because the whole thing about changing the mobo/processor and possibly the memory and power supply is too complicated and my brother in law could probably not be able to do it all.

How'd you know I was a female? I still can tell my fiancee it can't be fixed and I can get a pc/laptop instead of the both of us going shopping Wink.

Thanks for the help.

One comment that I never made
Jun 1, 2005 1:44AM PDT

regarding the original post is related to the fan becoming unglued. If you were to go with replacing the CPU, it is imperative that the heat sink/and fan are tightly attached to the CPU. If what had happened was that the mechanical clamp the holds the HSF in intimate contact with the CPU broke such that the contact is loose, then you would simply burn out the new CPU.

The clamps on the T-Bird CPU's [what you have] are not he easiest things to clamp. Can crack the CPU, or have the screwdriver slip and put a hole in the mobo.

If the person that would replace it does not have any related experience, get your laptop. LOL

That is very true! And thats exactly what happened to my fan/processor.

Thanks for your help.

Ok so I went to a local store and... bad news...
Jun 1, 2005 11:17PM PDT

The guy told me that they don't make my processor anymore so I'll be VERY LUCKY if I even find one, other than HP/Compaq and I haven't even called them to see if they have it. So it looks like I'm either gonna have to get a bundle, as long as I find one with SDRAM memory, not DDR, and as long as my brother in law knows how to put it in.

If not, then it looks like I may have to buy a new pc/laptop. You still recommend the R3000Z? Do you know where I could find it at a retail store, like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc?

Thanks for your help, Bob. Happy
