Thanks for your response.

AVG version: 10.0.1321
Virus DB: 1500/3598

I do not have any other anti virus installed. When I first got this laptop in October 2010 I installed the trial version of Norton. I uninstalled it ages ago, and have had to do a system recovery twice since them following different device issues previously, but was able to have AVG installed in the past on this laptop following having had Norton initially.

the error message reads wehn I click on 'Done' down the lower left hand corner:

Webpage error details User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; HPNTDF; InfoPath.2)Timestamp: Tue, 26 Apr 2011 13:08:26 UTC Message: HTML Parsing Error: Unable to modify the parent container element before the child element is closed (KB927917)Line: 0Char: 0Code: 0URI: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8241296/temporary-visas-to-be-incentives-bowen

Examples of difficulties occur on sites like:
* opening up news stories on www.ninemsn.com.au, www.independent.ie but no difficulties with www.smh.com.au
* I cannot use you tube. when you click on footage nothing comes up in the next screen

I do not have any other protection software installed

Thanks for your time. it is much appreciated!

Hello polishing,

Please update to AVG 10.0.1325. If AVG does not update automatically by clicking on 'Update now' button, update it manually by running repair installation with latest installation package.

Should the issue persist afterwards, provide us with information as described in post above by Ondrej_AVG.

Thank you

not sure what to do
May 1, 2011 10:28PM PDT

I am not sure what happened to the post I tried to post earlier. anyway, here goes again.

I have the upto date AVG version

I have internet explorer 8. I have tried to download to 9 but cannot do it. It says that it cannot install the updates so give me a microsoft website link explaining how to download updates manually. when i try to follow this it only allows me to get as far as to the windows update part in the control panel. When I click on the windows update it shows a red box with a cross in it. when i try to get it to check for updates it gives me the error

'Windows cannot currently check for errors because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer.;

so i restart the computer and nothing changes. How can I fix this? Is having version 9 important to fix my roiginal problem?

I do not understand what I need to do to give you a list of add ons? What does this mean?

Am I meant to disable to link scanner? what does this do?

Thanks

I disabled to link scanner and the problem goes away. How can I fix the problem? I am thinking that I really need to keep the link scanner on

Hello polishing,

I would like to ask you, which part of AVG LinkScanner has been disabled to solve the issue? AVG Search-Shield or AVG Surf-Shield or both?

Can you please check the situation with active AVG LinkScanner and disabled one of these add-ons to check possible conflict?

HP SimplePass Identity Protection Extension
MSN Toolbar
MSN Toolbar BHO
Windows Live ID Sign-in Helper

It works when I disable the search-shield in the link scanner. The disabling of the surf shield does not make it work.

When I disabled the add ons individually the problem was still there.

The windows update service is still not working. Should i test it with the search-shield disabled or is this risky?
