Probs after clean install of XP by professional

Nov 26, 2003 7:16AM PST

Well, I decided to move up to XP from ME. I had been very lucky and never really had problems with ME. Seems like XP is going to make up for it. Anyhow, I have been totally unable to get any peeps from my speakers since I got my tower back yesterday evening and having tried everything that I can think of today. There are, also, other quirks that I have to attempt to fix, but would really appreciate some suggestions on what to do with this "no" sound problem. I have an SB AudioPCI 128D card and Boston speakers. The driver appears to be the most up to date and is dated 6/18/02 with version 5.2.3633.0
I have update DirectX to work with XP. I have checked connections inside and outside of PC and speakers. All devices show as working properly an no "mute" is ckd on any sound controls and volume is up on all. I can not get a system sound (chord, etc.)

I had attempted an upgrade to XP from ME prior to having the pro do the clean install. I had gotten XP to fire up after the upgrade, but was unable to connect to the internet, had no sound either, and came across other issues which persuaded me to uninstall XP and continue to use ME until I could get someone else to do the clean install (what can I say,,,,I was not comfident enough to do it myself). Bottom line here and the point is that the pro did fine with the clean install and I can't figure out why XP will not allow me to listen to anything at all. Please???

Finally got the sound. Gateway didn't help. I found a driver older than the one I had and after downloading and installing for an hour or so.........searched for any settings that I could find that gave me the option of "Digital". Finally!!!!!!! Sound seems to be working fine now. Thanks bob

Gateway article was meant as a guide to the issue. NOT the solution.

Sometimes I may use a web article to illustrate the source of the issue (in this case the stock drivers) and then use that to leverage that knowledge to go find other drivers.

In any case, I think you caught on and figured it out even though I didn't spell it out directly.

Go ahead and pummel me since I'll try to improve my writings when I use this method of sharing...

This method of helping is better than spelling the answer out. It makes people think for themselves. That's what search engines are for! Keep it up.

Happy Thanksgiving Bob! Please don't take me wrong. In my original post I was trying to say that no one messed up the sound, but rather that I lost the sound when I tried to upgrade and, also, the sound was lost with the clean install by the Pro. I have not problems with the Pro's work at all.....was trying to indicate that there was something that happened with XP that didn't happen with ME and so I figured it had to do with something about drivers, etc. not being compatible with XP. I was only looking for any clues and the link you gave me was very helpful because it turned on a light bulb..........Digital vrs Analog.....and that, in turn, allowed me to pursue an avenue that I hadn't really considered. Anyhow, thanks a lot sir.
