Problems with Word 2004 for Mac

Hi I am having problems with Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac which has been working for me for almost a year thus far. All of the sudden it has been misbehaving.

The problem is that items will "go missing" from my file menu drop down lists (sorry, I'm not very technically inclined). For instance, the first thing that happened was on my File menu when New disappeared so I have to go to Project Gallery or click the little blank document icon on my tool bar. Also, now under Insert, Page Numbers has disappeared and I'm a writer so I need that function a lot.

How do I get the items back?

What I have done to solve the issue: restarted the program, manually check for updates and installed those updates.

Here are the stats on my computer and version of word:
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (got it a year ago)
Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac Version 11.5.0

If you turn on Word 5.1 menus some items like that vanish. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177388 is the article for Word 98. Maybe there is one for 2004 but I'll stop here.
