Problems with Ubuntu 10.10 screen resolution

Ubuntu defaults to 1024 x 768 sceen resolution although the monitor is a 17 inch, i can not set it to 1280 x 1024 but in windows xp it does work and sets to 1280 x 1024 can anyone help me fix this. The Graphics Card is Intel 82865G graphics controller and the monitor is 17 inch fujitsu simens with serial no YEAN013034

I just went on the link you sent but when i try and download the edited versions of the kernel it doesn't work

Got it fixed

I have got it fixed now, just by unplugging all the cables from the back of the computer and putting them back in.
