Question

Problems with Samson Meteor Mic

Nov 1, 2018 8:32PM PDT

Hello. I have a Samson Meteor Mic and I can't find a solution to my problems anywhere on the internet.

I have three main problems. The first one being that the microphone simply can't pick up sound properly over 5cm of distance. I have to put the microphone near my mouth in order to get some audio.

The second one being that, if I increase the microphone level on Windows settings, I get a really bad background noise (it is not mechanical, I've already tested that).

And the third one is more of an extension of the first two problems. Even when I increase the microphone level to 100, my microphone won't pick up more distant sound (it used to clearly pick up my voice when I was laying on bed, for example. About 1.5m of distance).

Important notes are:

-I loaded Audacity yesterday to test some audio, I didn't see any problems with the audio.

-I unplugged my mic from my usb hub yesterday (I had to go home and pack my things)

-I plugged the mic on one of the notebook's USB ports and loaded Audacity. This is where I saw that the mic wasn't picking anything (same configurations from yesterday)

-Then I plugged the mic on the USB hub and the problem persisted.

Here are the audio samples:

The noise (mic level at 100): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnirobES1qckpx77szRDyLYUt7Qs

Me trying to speak (mic level at 31): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnirobES1qckpx3Ynue7r8FDoqol

Mic close to mouth (mic level at 31): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnirobES1qckpxy28nkf9WRPf0dW

I had to reduce the mic level to get the noise to an acceptable level.

Sounds defective.

Try another one.

I used it for about a month...

I really need to know what are the possibilities here.

If it's defective, I can't really afford another one (it's at least R$400 here)

I don't understand what happened. There must be some kind of configuration or hardware change that happened (There's a adjustable "wheel" on the microphone, but it never did anything...), because it's really unlikely for a microphone like that to stop working out of the blue...

Already done that

First thing I did. Coming here was my last resort.

OK.

Then as Bob said, get a new one. It's under warranty Right?

It isn't

Samson doesn't sell it directly to Brazil. So, besides having to pay the extra money, we rarely get warranty from the resellers.

Last tests or last rites.

Test it on other PCs/Apples/Phones/things. See if it's bad. Too bad about no warranty. Must be hard to sell stuff like this in your country as folk get burned too often. That is, gear does fail. New doesn't mean it shouldn't fail.

Just a bad country to live in

Yep, it has the same problem on another computer.

Even Nintendo got out of here because business here is a no-go.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't fail. I know it does. But it's pretty bad when that happens out of the blue and you really don't know if it's failed hardware or software.

Actually is likely.

I agree
Nov 2, 2018 3:36PM PDT

Yes, I agree there is a possibility it has stopped working for no reason.

However, I really need to know what are the possible causes for this, it is a really expensive piece of hardware here, at least R$400 (Samson doesn't sell it directly to Brazil, you have to buy it from a reseller. It has no warranty). I can't afford to buy another one.

Is this really the only possibility?

What possibility?

If it fails to work on all other devices then that's how I tell if the thing is gone.

If there is no warranty why not see if anyone YouTube's how to open it up and look for loose bits?
