Problems with router

Mar 4, 2011 12:54AM PST

I recently got married and we bought a router to hook both our computers up. My computer works pretty well, only an occasional hang up but hers is continually hanging up and stopping and getting stuck which makes her fuss, yell and threaten to throw it out the window.

Are there any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I know just enough about computers to really screw one up so please keep it simple...

She has an older computer and is running XP, mine is newer and is running Vista. The router is Netgear wireless GR-614.

Why Do You Think It's The Router?
Mar 4, 2011 1:03AM PST

What do you mean by "hang up"? Is the computer shutting down or is there an internet connection problem?

How are both computers connected to the router.. Wired or wireless? Have you tried updating the ethernet or wireless adapter on your wife's computer? If wireless access is being used, tried changing the channels on the router signal?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

When I hooked her computer directly up to the cable modem and disconnected the router it worked fine. I have wire connections to the router and from the router to the cable Modem.

By "locked up" I mean it just sits there and no matter what she clicks on it does nothing...if you let it sit there for a while it will eventually do what you wanted. Also sometimes she will try to open a new window and she just gets a blank screen and it just sits there doing nothing till she reboots.

If A Reboot Fixes The Issue...
Mar 4, 2011 1:20AM PST

...then it's most likely an issue with the computer, not the router..

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is malware.. If you haven't already, download the free malware removal tool from the link below, install it, update it, then run a full system scan and delete any malware it finds.

Malwarebytes Antimalware

In addition, are you both running different antivirus programs and firewall programs? If so, try disabling them on your wife's computer and see if it helps.

To update the drivers on a Windows XP computer, first, open Device Manager, click on the + sign next to "Network Adapters", then double click on the ethernet adapter listing.. When the ethernet adapter's properties window opens, click on the "Driver" tab and write down the driver date, the driver, provider, and the driver version number. With that in hand, visit the computer manufacturer's website and see if there is an updated driver for the ethernet adapter.. If so, download it and install it per the instructions given at the site.

If there is nothing newer at the computer manufacturer's site, then visit the website of the driver provider and see if they have one that is newer.

Hope this helps.
