problems with router

Mar 29, 2004 4:26AM PST

I have a problem with a "eTEC ADSL Router 4 ethernet port/USB" (thats as close as i can to the model). I am using this to connect to my 512k ADSL. The problem i am having is when i am file sharing on msn the exchance in data is really slow even when exchaning with someone with a greater bandwith than myself. There is also a problem evident when i am using bittorrent, bittorrent says that i am behind a firewall, but i dont use a firewall and i have checked that the xp firewall is off.
Dont think that the spec of my pc has anything to do with it well i'm 99% posotive because i cant see how it can.

if anyone could suggests any settings to slove this problem, i am more concerend about bit torrent than msn, then i would apreciate it

MSN is famous for installing spyware (not intentionally but through some of it's third party partners). So first, you'll need to get a spyware remover like Spybot Search & Destroy. Some of this spyware will eat up massive amounts of bandwidth. The other problem I see is, as mentioned elsewhere, sharing files over MSN. MSN is a terrible ISP to try and share files over due mainly because, like AOL, there are too many users trying to use limited equipment.

You are behind a firewall

Your router is a nat firewall and if you have msn dsl most of their modems have firewalls built into them. What speeds do you download at when downloading from a legitimate site. Try going to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
and see what speed you have.
