Problems with recording

Aug 15, 2005 2:53PM PDT

I have Win 98, 128RAM, 13GB with 8.5 left. Run McAfee,AdAware, Spybot and Yahoo DSL.

I have been using Steinberg WaveLab for recording vinyl to disc and then to CD.

I have stutters (randomly) after recording to Hard disc). It usually is when I'm recording a long song. I've tried disabling scheduling agent, and McAfeee with some success. But, I was wondering if my DSL modem (Speedstream 5100) could be trying to reconnect to the internet and be causing this stuttering? I've heard that DSL randomly does checks (don't know what they are called) for activity. Will physically shutting off my modem prevent the stuttering? Is there another explanation for the stuttering?

With my 98 system

I shutdown the system first, then I startup system and close (ctrl-alt-delete) all running programs, except Explorer, making sure resources are high 98%. I've never had to shutdown my modem, but you could try that also. Also defragging HD might help also.

I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to computers. I'm not sure how to close the running programs with control-alt-delete. I usually uncheck everything in msconfig instead.

control-alt-delete

Highlite each, click End Task. Some might refuse to close, click End Task again from the new box that pops ups.

maybe you should consider a newer system

I hate to state the obvious without sounding brash but with the cost of computers so low, you may consider upgrading to something with some processing punch, like 2 ghz or so. You can get MB CPU combos on ebay for cheep. I realize there are a lot of 98 users out there but xp is the system right now and most of these new MBs are good with it. I can run a bunch of stuff while recording and never get a whimper.

My guess is small memory, slow CPU, and one slow hard

drive servicing both programs and data (the audio). It is most likely that improving any of the three would improve your situation. The easiest way to improve all three is a new computer.
