Problems with readyboost

Dec 16, 2009 12:27AM PST

I was using a 4GB flash drive for ReadyBoost on the Win7 RC. When I officially got Win7 in the mail, I installed it right away. I tried to use the same flash drive for ReadyBoost, and it wouldnt let me! I figured the drive was just corrupt, so I ignored it.

I have since tried THREE other ReadyBoost verified drives, and it has said for each of them that the drive cannot be used for ReadyBoost.

I have tried 2 2GB Super Talent Pico drives, 1 4GB Super Talent Pico, and 1 A-DATA Sport Series 16GB.

Any ideas as to what is wrong???

One thought is that you keep trying to use readyboost instead of just buying more RAM which will give you vastly better results and really isn't that much more expensive when you consider all the flash drives you'll go through with readyboost.

ReadyBoost is designed to be a TEMPORARY solution at best. Maybe you're editing an especially large file in Photoshop for example, and could use a little extra RAM. It's NOT designed to be a long term substitute for having enough RAM in your system. Stop being a cheap b@stard and just buy some RAM.

RAM

My first question is how much RAM do you have installed in the first place?

Patriot EXporter 4G works here

I ran it for a while. The icons said it was working as readyboost. Sometimes I could notice the light on the Flash Drive was flashing, but, honestly I could not notice any change in overall speed. I have older homebuilt with Abit An8 mobo, Athlon single-core 64-bit CPU 3500+, 4 gig Corsair XMS ram @ 400 speed, got my CPU o,clocked just a tad, I show 3.4 Windows experience. None of that changed when I ran ReadyBoost.

No make or model.

I wonder if your machine's bios and motherboard drivers are current. These are things MSFT did not check for us. But at 4GB it's unlikely to give much if any boost.

Alright

My MoBo is maxed out on RAM (8GB). So to Jimmy Greystone, instead of calling me a "cheap b@stard", maybe you could just stop being an arrogant pr1ck???

I can check if the BIOS and Mobo drivers are current, but I am pretty sure I updated them when I installed Win7 Pro. Thanks for helping, Bob.

Then you don't need it

Then you don't need to be messing with ReadyBoost if you have 8GB of RAM. It's going to give so little benefit it may as well be none. So you can stop wasting flash drives for no particular reason anymore.

Your checking. My checking.

I'd like to see make, model, bios version, version of that motherboard driver package you used without clicking the Driver Update button MSFT has yet to perfect.

Members could check this out for you but I read this discussion again and can't find the details.
