Problems with Nero

Jan 4, 2005 8:58AM PST

Well, here I am at my local library's computer. How embarassing! What brought me to this, you ask? well It's like this -- I tried to install Nero on my home computer (I'd received it as a bundle with the new DVD/CD burner I ordered for a computer under construction. All went smoothly until I rebooted at completion. After the desktop loaded, the taskbar disappeared - or rather it's contents disappeared. Along with that, the cursor became inoperative -- couldn't do anything but move it. Buttons and scroll wheel did nothing. Tried to "ctrl+alt+del" it into a restart. Seemed to be going ok, then, instead of the desktop, I got the message (paraphrasing here) "Exception OE at 0028:00010965 in VXD VFAT(01) + 0000B8ED.
Called from 0028:C1833669 in VXD voltrack (01)+ 00000430" Followed by, "may be possible to continue",
"Press any Key to attempt to continue"
"Press ctrl + alt + del to restart"
Press any key to continue.
Ever since then, it's been on this merry-go-round. I can't do anything! Went into Safe Mode and uninstalled Nero. While there, ran Avast! with no negative results. Attempted to get on internet while in Safe Mode, but kept getting message informing me that the Port was invalid or in use. Pertinent information is this: Gateway Essential 450, unknwn mobo, Pentium III (450MHz), WD 30 GB HDD, 384MB mem., So,Geez guys, what do I do now? Sure hope someone has some ideas. Will stop by the library tomorrow to check for responses. Thanks loads.

system restore?

Have you tried doing a system restore while in the safe mode? Go back to a time before you installed the software.

Nero Problems

No, I hadn't tried that. To be honest, I've been so frustrated with this and my not-yet-completed machine, that I haven't been thinking clearly. I'll try that and post the results.

Update
Jan 6, 2005 2:16AM PST

Tried the system restore CD. Win98 doesn't recognize CD-ROM in Safe Mode. Thanks for the suggestion, anyway. Did some diagnostics in Safe Mode, though, and found that file setupx.dll was corrupted. Naturally, I can't do anything about that in SM either.
Will update again when I learn what the gurus found.

next time

When I was talking about doing a system restore, I wasn't referring to the restore CD. System restore is a utility built into ME and XP that allows you to revert your computer back to an earlier time before the problem happened. I hope you don't need to use it anytime soon but, it is something to try if another problem occurs.

Kind figured that

When there was no CD-ROM showing up in Safe Mode. I should've clarified my OS in the first post. But that's what I like about these forums (fora?). We all learn something new with every post. Thanks to one and all.

Final Update
Jan 7, 2005 10:09PM PST

Interesting -- Just got the machine back from the shop. They said all they did was do a system restore. Something I tried to do, but couldn't because I only had Safe Mode and therefore no CD-ROM. Thanks to all of you who tried to help. I really appreciate it. I'm sure we'll meet here again!

Now the light bulb comes on --

I was afraid of that. Yes, the Nero was 5.5. I didn't have access to anything indicating what OS it was meant for when this debacle began. Well, it's all water through the dike now, anyway. Just took the machine to the local repair guru. But thanks for waking me up!
