problems with ms office after re-installing windows xp

Sep 7, 2005 3:30AM PDT

please help....i recently upgraded my win98 to win xp...everything was working fine(including ms office) but after few weeks due to some problems with my cable connection i had to use system restore many times....this led to corruption of one of the boot files and i had to re install the windows....re-installing did not erase any of my applications(except for the shortcuts on the desktop) but most applications like ms office stopped working.... now whenever i go to the ms office directory and click on any application like winword nothing happens...this is happening with all the office applictions....this might have something to do with the registry but i am not sure....i dont have the ms office cd..please help asap

2 questions and a note

1. What version of Office?

Office 97 (and prior) has issues. No fix is planned.

2. Did you install office again?

Your post didn't tell.

-> If you need an Office compatible suite today, look at http://www.openoffice.org

Bonus question: Why do you think this is a registry issue?

I don't think he did reinstall Office.

His post is difficult to read, but near the end he says "i dont have the ms office cd". So I'm not really amazed it doesn't work.

His options seem to be:
- buy the MS Office CD
- replace MS Office by Open Office

http://www.openoffice.org has the downloads.

If you want, call Microsoft and get your 2000 Office CD ordered since they will replace your lost CD for much less than what a new retail copy is. Quite the bargain.

I have a friends computer I'm working on and had to install a new (legal) version of XP (from Windows 9Cool. MS Office no longer works now.

I have the install disks for Office but can someone tell me where in his registry the product key is located? The programs are all still installed just not working since the new XP installation and there's no tag on the computer with the product number. CDs are in a Gateway notebook and no numbers with them. And he's out of town Sad

Anyone know the path to the key?

Gail
