Problems with Maxtor 300 GB external HD and Macbook

I just recently got a Macbook for myself and I have an external Maxtor HD where i keep all my music, videos, and such. I want to be able to hook up my HD to my Mac and access my songs when i go 2 school, but when i plug in the hd into the mac using a firewire it will see that there is a hard drive and i can click on it and I'll see all the folders that are right in the folder after i enter the hard drive but the problem is if i have a folder inside a folder then it doesn't show up. Is there any solution to this? I know i explained this poorly and if clarification is needed I'll do my best to provide it.
