it takes on average less than 10 seconds to be infected with a virus after connecting to the Internet with an unprotected computer. you will have to reinstall Windows from your system restore. then, buy a copy of a good antivirus program and install it before you connect to the Internet for the first time.
Herb...
Hi there.
I am pretty clueless when it comes to computing - but here goes....
I was given a pc by a relative, it has Windows 98 installed.
I connected with Freeserve and away I went....
Yesterday I was unable to connect to internet and called Freeserve (many times).
They told me to do a "ping test" which I did.
My pc was recognising the addresses e.g. 195.92.195.94, but not recognising the names e.g. www.bbc.co.uk.
I was told that my "winsock" may be corrupted
I was told to reinstall Windows totally.
I reinstalled using the System Restore Pack and all appeared to be ok....
I tried to download a game from the net (which I had a trial off prev and had been ok)
After doing this the game was extremely slow and wasnt worth the download...
I switched off and went to bed....
Today when I went to log on, same thing - not pinging !!!???
I have had to do the system restore again
Am now terrified to try and download anything !!
Could the game have caused the problem?
May be a coincidence but the free trial expired on the day or day before my connection went haywire???
Please help me you intelligent people....
I would really appreciate it
