Problems with installing Realtek Audio Drivers - need assist

Sep 12, 2007 6:25AM PDT

I am currently trying to install the Audio Codecs for a desktop. When I try to install the Realtek AC'97 driver software, a Window pops up saying that the software is not digitally signed and might not work with Windows XP. I continue with the installation. A few seconds later, the computer just reboots on it's own. After the computer has been fully booted, it says that Windows has recovered from a Serious error. I also get accompanying Window to pop up stating that there is a problem with ALCXWDM.SYS and Realtek doesn't have a solution to it at the current moment.

What I would like to know is if anyone else has encountered this before? Would anyone know where I could find a Realtek Audio Driver that is compatible with Windows XP? Even though the website says that the Audio Driver works with Windows XP, I suspect otherwise.

I have also tried downloading the High Definition Audio Driver from Realtek. It seemed to install ok and is listed in the Add/Remove Programs, but when I have gone to the Sound menu in the Control Panel, It still says that I have no audio device.

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Verify and check
Sep 12, 2007 7:02AM PDT

You need to verify if these are "build-in audio port" that it is enabled under the bios area. Find what keys allow you to enter during boot-up to do this. Once there, verify that's is "enabled". When you active audio and hopefully you have the proper driver for that version of Realtek. Normally, that driver is part of the mtrbd. or provided CD for such when the system was sold. If you no access to such, then again be sure you are suppling the right driver, normally these are gotten from the system vendor or audio maker's support website. good luck

Bios says that Audio is enabled

I went into BIOS and it mentions that the Audio was enabled. I thought ASUS had some potential drivers, but I can't seem to find them any more.

Any thoughts?

Right driver

You need the exact Asus model# and then visit the Asus Taiwan(.tw) website. The US(if that's the one) usually can be troublesome at times. I find the Taiwan website more ready but use the version you need(English), etc. and proceed from there. You will need to un-install any current versions you have, then reboot before using the new one you get, then install. Otherwise, it can conflict. If there are patches or known issues, review that in their FAQ files or posts. If you need to be sure of what audio chipset, look at the mtrbd. itself, usually by the audio port, find anything that seems Realtek or makes of audio chips as a last resort. Installing the wrong version for chipset will result in your problem or similar. If you find you can't get it, try this website: http://www.driversguide.com you need to register but its free to get drivers. I'm sure there are other driver website, but found that one helpful.

Can get Realtek HD and AC97 drivers from Realtek.com
Dec 27, 2008 2:41AM PST

I have a problem with the internal mic in my Acer Aspire One that may be solvable if I can remove AC97 and reinstall it. I got the Realtek HD and AC97 from Realtek, but can't figure out how to properly remove AC97 since it doesn't how up on the add/remove list. When i install AC97 without first removing it, it installs OK, but I know that is not the way to fix the mic since AC97 first has to be removed. So how do I remove Ac97?

Experiment
Jul 11, 2010 5:31PM PDT

Dear all,
I experimented something, might be interesting to you, as soon as I start installing the driver on a customer's pc, exactly the tyme when it was going to crash, I moved the mouse with fast speed around and ran several processes to keep the CPU busy, much to my surprise, it totally worked and the driver was installed correctly and there happens to be no problems at all anymore.
MotherBoard: ASROCK P4 Combo
Audio: CMedia CMI9739A 6 channel AC'97
OS: Windows Xp Service Pack II

got the same problem, almost
Aug 29, 2010 1:56AM PDT

realtek onboard sound, the realtek sound manager in the control panel works properly, excect, I cannot select a mixer device in the drop down. All the drivers state they are working properly, the sound card is enabled in the BIOS.

When troubleshooting through Microsoft websupport - it keeps pointing to no mixer device is selected. This is part of the driver selection for the realtek driver, it is selected there. I dont know what else to do.

This occurred when I installed a new video card, ASUS 9500GT, it appeared in the driver list for the sound card and if I remember correctly it took over the mixing device?

I downloaded the driver from realtek, but when I install it, the .inf cant be found so I cant install it via that process. The read me says to use just the setup.exe, but does not work either.

any thoughts?
