Question

Problems with initiating Sleep mode

May 5, 2018 11:53AM PDT

Just migrated my Windows 10 (Version 1709 - OS Build 16299.371) from my old PC to a brand new HP Pavilion Desktop. I usede Macrium Reflect to create an image of my old PC which was then Restored and Redeployed onto the new machine. Had some initial problems with the old PC Bios being in MBR format while the new one was in UEFI mode.

Eventually managed to get it to boot with a few workarounds suggested by my son,
New PC is now fine and is exactly set up as the old machine. I initially had 2 problems though. First was that the PC would not shut down when that command was selected from the Start menu. Had to do a hard shut down with the power button. Solved that problem by tweaking the Power settings by disabling the Fast Restart option. All now fine with that issue.
Second problem is that I cannot get the PC to enter Sleep mode. When I select Sleep from the Start button menu the screen goes black then a few seconds later the sign in screen reappears and I have to enter my password again. No sound of hard drive shutting down or any other sleep function. Have tried setting up a Sleep icon on the desktop but that produces the same result. Graphics card drivers are all up to date. So I'm struggling where to go next.
Any ideas out there. I use sleep mode quite a lot usually and I'm frustrated that I can't get it to work

Sounds like the usual.

Windows does not move from PC to PC well. If at all.

Be sure to NEVER use Microsoft's Update Driver button for driver checks. Use the old fashioned ways. Go to the makers and get the drivers there.

You'll update the BIOS (sleep issues start there) and then off to motherboard, audio, video, LAN, WiFI (if applicable) and other drivers. No USB things can be plugged in until it's working right.

Windows 10 migration
May 8, 2018 5:05AM PDT

Hi there

Tks for the input and suggestions.

My Win 10 seems to have migrated relatively successfully. All major programmes and functions are up and running without any issues.

I did resolve that shut down problem by going into the Power button functions and disabling the fast start-up option.

The sleep mode is still not resolved. I haven't used the internal Windows driver update facility. I already had a driver application installed IOBit Driver Booster. That flagged up a total of 23 drivers that needed updating and all of these have been installed.

My next step is to download and install the BIOS driver for my PC from the HP website and give that a try.
It's not the end of the world if I can't get sleep mode to work.
Have also had an issue with a recent update (Windows 10 Update Version 1803) not installing correctly. Got an error message (ox80070003) and a statement that "some update files are missing or have problems. Try downloading later" Still getting to the bottom of that.

The only good thing about driver booster

Is how many machines it sends to my friends in the computer repair business. It's that iffy.

My friends (and I) get drivers the old fashioned way. We get them from the machine or board makers. Sorry folk, it's still the best way to update your drivers.

Yeah, but you went from...

a motherboard with older controlling chips on it to a newer motherboard with new and different controller chips on it, and that means you need to install all the necessary drivers for the newer computer from the manufacturer's site, and to keep it that way, as Rob said, turn off Microsoft's driver updates.

Windows 10 Sleep Solution
Nov 22, 2018 8:08AM PST

I just installed a new solid state drive (SSD) and Windows 10 in my 2009 HP Desktop - and immediately was faced with Sleep mode not working properly.

After consulting with my local computer expert and checking online, there was no clear solution. So, after much playing around and thought, I found the perfect and easy solution for my computer.

(1) To see if it will work for your computer, simply put the Hibernate option into the "Shut down or sign out" box as follows.

To put the Hibernate option into the "Shut down or sign out" box:
- Power Options click Additional power settings click Choose what the power buttons do click Change settings that are currently unavailable click Hibernate Show in Power menu click Save changes click X in top right corner (twice).

Then go to "Shut down or sign out" and click on Hibernate and if that works - such as the computer power light shuts totally off and responds immediately to being turned on - then you have the solution as detailed below.

(2) Turn off all Sleep and Hybrid settings - including click to remove Sleep option from the options under "Shut down or sign out" (as per above) - as follows.
- Power Options click Additional power settings click Change plan settings click Put the computer to sleep select Never click Save changes click Change advanced power settings click Sleep click Sleep after select Never click Allow hybrid sleep select Off click Hibernate after select 30 minutes click Power buttons and lid click Sleep button action select Hibernate click Apply click OK click X in top right corner (twice).

Even though it is claimed by some that Hybrid is the best option - my use of exclusive Hibernate is very fast and efficient to return to action (including Fast Start-up ON) while saving maximum energy!

Oct 17, 2019 7:29PM PDT

I also had the same issue. Recently I updated my laptop from 7 to 10. But after upgrading there were no sound. I was confused what to do! I was searching for a better solution by following some online articles which are written on the basis of Windows 10 https://windowsmaximizer.com/blog/no-sound-windows-10/. And finally got the point. My issue is solved now.
