Problems with iMovie

Oct 31, 2008 12:20PM PDT

I'm using an iBook G4 - with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I'm running iMovie 6.03.

I am trying to make a movie using clips from Sony camcorder with photos inserted. Photos are stored in iPhoto.

Last night, I tried to insert a photo from iPhoto. It appeared in the timeline; then after rendering was complete, the photo image in the timeline turned black and the photo in the preview screen had "3ivx trial" in red stamped diagonally across it. The photo was in the program trash along with a black image - 0 mg. Have no idea what this is about. I had successfully placed photos in chapter one - this is happening in chapter two.

Would love it if someone could help. Thank you.

Anything special
Oct 31, 2008 1:20PM PDT

about the photo you tried to insert?

Although, if it displays correctly in iPhoto one would assume it would display correctly in iMovie.

Strange about the 3ivx trial stamp though. As if it had been converted from something else by a piece of software that was not fully licensed, like trial ware.

If you select the photo in iPhoto and look at the info, does it offer a clue?

Nothing Special
Oct 31, 2008 2:47PM PDT

Checked the info on the photo as you suggested and there is nothing unusual there. Picture info appears to be normal - taken 6 days ago. No unusual notations. I think I remember coming to cnet once before about a problem I had with a Flip and 3ivx may have been recommended as a program to download, but I just checked apps and no 3ivx is there. Also looked for it with 'find'.

Anything else I can try?

Thank you.

That picture
Oct 31, 2008 11:11PM PDT

Is it only happening with that one photo or is it now happening with any photo lthat you try to insert into iPhoto?

Instead of using "Find" to look for 3ivx, try using Spotlight (top right hand corner of the screen)

I just did and found that I have a version of that software installed.

Meanwhile, try with a different photo and see if you get the same results

Found it!
Nov 1, 2008 1:02AM PDT

Good Morning P,

What a great suggestion to use Spotlight. Bingo. There is a 3ivxAppLink.pkg along with 10 other documents and some are related to Flip. There is one called '3ivs uninstaller' is that what I'm looking to do? There is also a folder 3ivx in /Library/Application Support.

I'm not sure what to do next.

I will try to place other photos in the timeline when I get back from my class this morning and let you know if it happens to more than just that one picture.

Thanks so much for your help.

Let's wait to see how other photo's behave in that second part and go from there.

All Stamped
Nov 1, 2008 6:43AM PDT

Okay - set up a new imovie and started with a chapter theme - tried to import from iPhoto several photos and they all got stamped 3ivx when they appeared in the timeframe.

What should I do next?

Thank you.

Hi P,

I will try to uninstall. Let you know how it turns out. Hope that'll do it.

Thanks again,

No Luck

Hi P,

Tried to install the uninstaller and it keeps telling me to try again. A microsecond message said something about not being able to configure.

What next?

I hate manual labor on a Sunday morning!
Nov 1, 2008 11:22PM PDT

Guess we'll have to do this the hard way.
1. Delete the 3ivx folder in the Applications folder (or wherever you found it)
2. Go to Hard Drive > Library > Application Support. Remove the 3ivx folder from there
3. Go to Hard Drive > Library > QuickTime. Remove the 3ivx codec from there
4. Go to Hard Drive > Library > Receipts. Remove all 3ivx items.
5. Restart your machine.

Let's see what happens now.

If this does not work, you could try emailing the 3ivx people and explain your problem.
support at 3ivc.com is the address they tout.

Another suggestion is to re-install the 3ivx trial and then run the uninstaller again. Try the numbered steps first and don't forget the restart.

Let us know

Me Too!
Nov 2, 2008 12:31AM PDT

I do apologize for occupying your Sunday morning. Sorry.

But, we really have a mystery on our hands.

I have tried to find any evidence of 3ivx folders, app, docs etc. in the folders you suggested including Receipts in Library and according to spotlight they are there, but they aren't. There seems to be nothing to delete. The folder, com.3ivx-.3ivx-codec, if I double click on any of the pkgs, it launches it, but I can't delete anything. Should I reinstall the codec pkg and then try the uninstall?

Last night, I went to their website and I wrote to 3ivx detailing the challenge. Of course, they're having a leisurely Sunday morning. HaHa

If I didn't say it before - thanks a lot.

Packages
Nov 2, 2008 1:19AM PDT

Double clicking on any of the packages in the Receipts folder will result in the installer app running.

Are you saying that there is NO 3ivx codecs in the QuickTime Library?

The steps I detailed do not require the use of Spotlight, which does not find files outside of certain applications. (See Spotlight preferences for more detail)
Instead you should be navigating to the HD > Library manually.
It is the 3ivx codec in the QuickTime folder in the library that is causing this problem.

To delete any of the offending items, just drag them to the trash. If you have admin rights on that machine, it will let you do it.

Define "but I can't delete anything"

thanks!

Hi,

I had the exact same problem as the poster above.

Following your instructions on deleting all 3ivx-files all over
the disc worked out perfectly. I didn?t even have to restart the computer.
Strangely they weren?t to be found by spotlight, but with your guidance
i managed to remove those darn files anyway.

Created an account just to say thanks Happy
cheers!

More Details
Nov 2, 2008 2:25AM PST

I was out of reply windows, so I was directed to go back to the beginning.

OK - I'm making progress. Opened the hard drive, and in Library, found "Receipts" and bingo, all the 3ivx files were there. There is nothing by that name in the application, app support or quicken folders.

I dragged all of them to the trash, emptied it and am about to restart. I'm learning so much from you. Thank you and thank for your patience.

I'll let you know if the problem is solved.

Doing well
Nov 2, 2008 3:09AM PST

If you were to repeat the other steps I mentioned you would be good to go. (Theoretically)

Not sure how we got to Quicken. The only thing I mentioned that started with a Q was QuickTime.

You need to remove the codec from there too.

My Mistake
Nov 2, 2008 4:26AM PST

I didn't mean Quicken - I meant QuickTime.

The only files in the Library/QuickTime folder are: AppleIntermediateCodec.component, Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component, Flip4Mac WMV Export.component, and Flip4Mac WMV Import.component.

I didn't find any 3ivx files in the Application Support folder, the Applications folder and the QuickTime Folder - only in Receipts.

I think maybe I'm good to go, but maybe you can tell me why when I emptied the trash and then restarted my computer, it took a while to start and the icon for my hard drive was in a different place and instead of its usual name, it had and I - strange. I relocated it on my desktop and gave it its old name. Maybe it's feeling overworked.

Can't work on my video this afternoon - other stuff to get done, but will try it tonight and let you know how it goes.

Thank you,
J

Not sure why the HD moved and renamed itself.

As long as it boots, you should be good to go
