problems with flip out LCD

by LOUARCH / September 18, 2009 9:03 AM PDT

I was ready to purchase a Canon SX10is for both its price (($350.) and its cool flip out, tilt LCD.(no more glare rendering it unreadable) but hear this feature drastically slows its focus time as well as other problems. Any disadvantages or advantages with this feature? Lou from Montana

Flip Out LCD

Lou from Montana.

I don't see how a flip out LCD can affect focus time.
However, a long optical zoom lens will lengthen focus time.

The only disadvantage to a flip out LCD is a little bit of added weight and it adds cost to the camera.

Agree with the above.

It should not be an issue with the SX10.

Are you perhaps confusing this with a DSLR? The Live VIew AF on the Nikon D5000, for example, is significantly slower than focusing via the optical viewfinder. But that's strictly a result of using the Liew View LCD; the fact that the LCD also happens to flip out has no impact. And this has no bearing on any "compact" style camera, including the SX10.
