Question

Problems with external monitor when updating vid card driver

Jun 17, 2012 11:34PM PDT

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5739 that has an Nvidia Geforce GT 240M. For years, I've had the laptop connected to a Compaq WF1907 external monitor, which has a resolution of 1440x900, 60Hz. When I first had the computer, I had to open up the Nvidia Control Panel and make a custom resolution for the external monitor. However, after updating the driver to the april 9th version (I have recently noticed some very faint moving horizontal lines across the screen that I hoped the update would help, since plugging in a roommates laptop into the monitor removed all problems--but that's another story), I found that I couldn't get the external monitor to display in its normal resolution. Even after going through the steps of adding a custom resolution, the driver would still display things in 1280x768 even though the Control Panel would say that it was displaying things in the custom resolution I set up in 1440x900. I have attached a screenshot below. Updating to the most recent driver has also caused similar problems.
I would appreciate any help with the subject, including if anyone knows how to resolve the moving lines issue. I'm not particularly tech-sophisticated, but I think I understand enough about computers to at least be able to follow most conversations, so just let me know if there's something I need find for you guys to help me. Thanks in advance for the help!

Tell more about those drivers.

In laptops we must stick to the maker's issued drivers. When folk use other drivers, they find themselves out on a limb and no support.
