Question

Problems with Call Forwarding

Jan 30, 2014 9:51AM PST

I was under the impression that when I set up Call Forwarding, all calls to my phone number will be sent to the phone number that I set up to receive calls -- but that the phone message that comes on if the forwarded number/phone is not answered should still be the message that comes on at my phone. Is this true? If so, can someone tell me what technical difficulties our phone (or phones) are experiencing and what to do?

I forwarded all calls from our home number (Wide Open West Phone/Internet/Cable. The phone is a cordless Vtech) to my sister's cell phone (Tracfone/Motorola/Safelink Service), since we were going to be gone for a while. I pressed *72 and my sister's number. She answered, which confirmed that everything was set up correctly.

While we were out, we received one call that we answered. When I got home, I deactivated Call Forwarding by pressing *73.

Everything was quiet for the evening. However, today, I was told by two people that they tried to call my home phone number after I deactivated Call Forwarding, but got my sister's cell phone's voice mail message. They just hung up.

Even if I had forgotten to deactivate Call Forwarding, shouldn't the messages have gone to my home phone's voice mail message -- and not my sister's, since it wasn't her number they dialed? By the way, neither caller had her number, so they couldn't have dialed it by accident.

Everything seems okay today, although I did not set up Call Forwarding.

What could be wrong? My cable/phone/Internet company never heard of that happening. They just told me to make sure I had deactivated Call Forwarding via my web account to make sure.

Answer
If active, they *should* hear your sister's VM

It's a forward, not a forward/bounce back service.

Are you 500% certain you actually deactivated it correctly, e.g. testing it out immediately after pressing *xx(?)

That would be one possibility at least. I know Comcast is flaky sometimes in this regard in combination with our cordless Panasonics. I often have to go to the base station to enter commands as such.

I'd try asking in the WOW support forums, and also @ DSLreports.com. Some useful info in both places IME.

Yes, I'm sure! :)

HI Pepe7! Yes, in fact, I'm 1000% sure I deactivated Call Forwarding when I returned home. Also, my cable/phone/Internet company said that my voice/message should have came on when callers were sent to voice mail, even though it was my sister's phone.

If that's true...

Interesting!

Hi Pepe7,

You have a point there. Your manual shows that option in call forwarding to have calls sent to my voice mail by pressing *98, mine only shows the option to forward to a specific number.

Thanks for sharing the link to your phone company (Shaw). That explains things a lot better. I think that the rep from WOW wasn't sure himself, and neither were the other techs he consulted. This is odd for WOW, who usually are up on things.

Anyway, thanks again for your help! Happy

I'm on Comcast ;)

Shaw was another example so you can see how it works. Usually VM is nearly identical between the various large companies, with a few variations of numerical commands. It's been around for decades I suppose Wink
