Problems with back ground programs and updates in 7

Feb 15, 2010 10:39AM PST

I'm having loads of problem with updates and programs running behind the scenes in windows 7. The symptoms are legginess, hangs and slow operation. These are dragging my system to a stand still at times. This appears to be a problem with updates from M$ and just about everything that connects for updates. Scans are a problem as well. I'm using AT&T/McAfee anti-virus. I'm using McAfee fire wall. It has a self test that says it's running fine. Before that I was using Windows firewall and showed the same problems thou perhaps not as badly.

The updates are a particularly difficult problem because they occur prior to the updates being done, so I have no idea what is going to be updating that is causing the problem. These do not show up on the "Task Manager" or if they do, they are so brief I can not see them. The overall effect is the appearance of system instability that would meet this definition: a constantly changing system with numerous problems.

This is a big deal.

Fine, you don't want to help, you can live with the problem. Makes no difference to me. Mine isn't the system with the problems. Mine runs exceedingly well, unlike yours. So, good luck with your problem. Let us know how it turns out, or if you change your mind about helping us to help you.

"all" the other updates and scans. I do have a notice enabled for the anti-virus scan. In the end this will end up as an Os problem but we'll see what you have to recommend.

Well it's good to see you 'helpers" are as friendly as ever. Has it been a rough day? I assure you not as rough as on SL Answers.

Feb 15, 2010 5:17PM PST

while I'm on line using the Firefox browser:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa969540%28VS.85%29.aspx

Also appears as dwm.exe without the Microsoft discription, I might add (Virus?), in task manager. My scans have been clean.

This appears to be primarily an Aeros application. The only thing I'm running while on line is transparent glass. On the desktop dwm.exe does not run in task manager.

Background Programs
Feb 16, 2010 12:02AM PST

Get rid of McAfee. These commercial programs are still real resource hogs. Try Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and works great with little system drain. Also, if you don't search your system too much, stop the indexing service. It is also a hog. Also check the Services in Task Manager. Add the column CPU TIME to see what services may be running a lot in the background.

The problem appears to be in the Windows 7 OS
Feb 16, 2010 1:07PM PST

Windows updates, HP updates, all updates ....... Java, Adobe, etc., etc., are trying to do something to check there status and when they do the OS has problems: hangs, speeding up then slowing down, other anomalies but most notably when IE8 is running. Also back ground scans are slowing the OS to a crawl. This was something of a problem in Vista but is a major issue in Windows 7. I thought it was IE8, nope something in the OS perhaps the firewall. All combined the problem appears to be system wide instability.

Also see:

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-4_102-0.html?threadID=383178

Why the DMW.exe in IE8 and not on the desktop or in Windows utilities and apps..? I do use transparent glass but most of Aeros is shut down on this PC. If the problem was in Windows explore with the feature enabled this might be understandable but few appearance/Aeros settings run in EI8.

All those optimization plus many more have been done to this PC.

Geez I hope I never see this thread again but ..............
Mar 26, 2010 2:03PM PDT

Just recently I figured something out. When a new OS is released it usually gets overwhelmed with new updates and repairs for some of those new updates. Most of these problems occured in November right at the release of Window 7. So, some of those problem might have been "update overload" for lack of a better word. Up date overload effect all Windows OSs usually about February/March of each year and then just before school starts in the Fall and after SPs are released. Hmmm, an update migration of sorts. Grin )

It's working fine now or seems too, knock on wood.
