Problems when signing on to MSN Messenger

Jun 15, 2005 12:46PM PDT

Whenever i do this the contact list takes long to load. I notice my whole computer has been slowing down also. Tasks are taking long to complete and all.
I scanned for viruses using NAV and found 1 adware file.
I have like 4 GB (out of 53GB) of space left.
I reinstalled Messenger but the same problem occurred again.
Im using XP Home, P4, 256 kb of memory.

I bet full of spyware and other system junk both in the system and registry. Its time for a larger hard drive do a backup and or reload windows on the old HD to get a clean install and get rid of all that junk.

Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 and Spybot S&D
Jun 15, 2005 7:53PM PDT

Hi all ,

Well , you need to scan your computer for spyware/adware , that's for sure.

Just install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 ( http://www.lavasoft.de ) and Spybot Search & Destroy ( http://www.spybot.info )

Additionally , install Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 also , if you want too.

Forget about Norton Anti Virus or Mcafee , they are not trust worthy virusscanners.
Better to use something that's not named Norton of Mcafee.

Also install CCleaner ( Crap Cleaner , http://www.ccleaner.com )and get rid of all unused data , like logs , cookies and stuff like that.

Be sure to scan for virusses and worms as well.
NOT with Norton Antivirus , but with an online virusscanner.

Here are two good ones :

1) Panda ActiveScan : http://www.pandasoftware.com

2) TrendMicro's HouseCall Antivirus : http://www.trendmicro.com

I hope this will help you.

If not , please let me know.

Greetings ,

Im am security conscious, things are not bad.
Jun 16, 2005 4:05AM PDT

I use NAV 2005, Lavasoft adware SE 1.05 and Registry Mechanic (a new version).

I doubt my HD is full of spyware. Maybe it has 1 or 2.

Is Zone alarm good to use. I know of them more than Trend Micro but still tell me whats di best.

i dont like Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, it seems annoying and i dont want a whole bag of programs
on my HD. Hopefully i wish there was a world where 1 program can replace the functions of all these ''extra'' ones.

ive seen many good reviews on Spybot Search & Destroy. Do i need this in addition to the programs i listed above that i use already.

One thingi know i dont have is a firewall. I would love to use one but becuase i use ftp, LANs, clients,.. and do other things that require specific communication with each other, i am afriad that the firewall will add extra problems then ill have to diagnose it and all. I know the opening of ports will solve some of these problems, another problem will be lurking somewhere else.

Well the problem is that im no genius and i have to come to places like CNET and ask people i know for help, which i dont want to be doing every minute.

Jun 22, 2005 2:23AM PDT

Well im glad it wasnt because of spyware/viruses cah i dunno what i would do then since i already have methods in place to prevent them.

I freed up some space, have about 10 GB and things been better. It hasnt slowed to a crawl since.

Thanks yall.
