Since you have nothing to lose, file-wise, you can download DBAN (floppy, flash drive, and CD images are available), using it to completely wipe your hard drive. Afterwards run the Vista installer from DVD again and it should complete without incident.
Hope this helps,
John
So, I'm pretty sure I downloaded a virus from somewhere because whenever I would restart my computer it would erase my wireless driver. This wasn't that big of a problem for me because I restart my computer once every couple days and I would just plug it directly into the router and let vista auto update the drivers. This may or may not be related to my actual problem, I'm not sure. Anyways, one day I used my computer and put it down for the night. When I woke up and tried to get on it all I found was a black screen with a mouse pointer. I let it sit for a couple minutes and nothing happened so I tried to reboot it. Upon the reboot it said disk read error, press ctrl alt delete to resart. I then tried to pop in my system restore disks. These would make it so far and say that there is an error, contact hp for more information. I then tried to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows. When I got windows installing it would pop up and say error installing windows changes will not be saved. I have a hp dv6000 laptop running windows vista. I really dont need any of the information on my computer so wiping things is not a problem. But I dont know how to wipe a hard drive if I cant get the windows disk to do it for me. Anyone have any idea of what I can do?
