Problems resizing partitions with Paragon Partition Manager

Dec 30, 2006 6:41AM PST

Hi, I'm using Partition Manager 7 on a Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP MCE. I am trying to take space from my D partition to increase the size of my C partition. I have tried twice now and the size of C increases in PM, but so does the amount of used space! Windows, however, does not recognize the new partition size. Before my second try here were my details:

C: 6.2GB, 6.1GB used, 106MB free
D: 49.7GB, 31.0GB used, 18.7GB free

After running PM:

C: 6.6GB, 6.5GB used, 108MB free
D: 49.2GB, 31.0GB used, 18.2GB free

Windows reads:
C: 5.59GB, 5.48GB used, 105 MB free (this is what I was at before running PM for the first time)
D: 49.2GB, 31.0GB used, 18.1GB free

I see one issue. Very low free space on C:

Time to free up space there.

Umm, that's the problem...

My C drive is too small, so I'm trying to repartition space from D to C (All the files on C are essential, so I can't delete them, I need to make the partition bigger)

There has to be something on C that can be.,..

Deleted or uninstalled. If XP one can turn off then back on System Restore too.

That would work

I could uninstall and reformat, but it would defeat the purpose of buying partitioning software. It should be simple to move space from one partition to the other with this software, as that is one of the main functions of the software. I'm just wondering why the software says it has added space to C but Windows doesn't recognize this.

Uninstall some programs?

I guess I have to be more clear. If you can't uninstall some Office or other application to free up more space then I can see why you are stuck.

Sorry to read this isn't getting across to you as well as the tip about System Restore.

So you have a 60GB HDD and none of the partitions are

hidden...right?

Can you use PPM to shrink partition D: to say 35GBs or 40GBs ? If yes,

reboot and then use PPM to expand 'C:' to fill the unallocated space ?

Reboot and see results.

It worked!

Didn't have to delete anything or use System Restore.

I guess the problem was that PM was having problems taking space from D and giving it to C all in one step. It worked to do the 2 steps separately, now I have the extra space on C.

Thanks a lot!

Great news..You're welcome and Thanks for the feedback.

It's very helpful to know what works and doesn't. We can share that info with others who may encounter similar dilemmas.

VAPCMD

PS...I use Partition Magic and it will do things in a batch but honestly I prefer doing it manually. Once I shrink a partition, I want to see if it didn what I asked before going onto steps 2 or 3.

Manually

Yeah, Partion Manager was supposed to do it as a batch, but I guess now I've learned that it's safer to do it manually anyway.
